2 Coming Up… Company Overview Pipe Rehabilitation Clean and Survey

3 Company Overview New Zealand Owned Group of Companies
Operating for over 20 years Over 200 staff Technology specialists in: Pipe line condition assessment and rehabilitation SW and WW Networks operations, maintenance and management Branches in Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Blenheim and Christchurch

4 Pipe Rehabilitation

5 Trenchless Methods Fold and Form Spiral Plastic Cured In Place (CIPP)
UV CIPP Pipe Bursting Directional Drilling Micro Tunnelling Pipe Jacking Grouting There are a number of rehabilitation methods used in New Zealand. The common civil trenchless construction methods are pipe bursting, pipe jacking and directional drilling. The common trenchless lining products are Fold and form, Spiral plastic and CIPP. Lining has been used in New Zealand for over 30 years and has recently come to the forefront in recent times as the rehabilitation method of choice after the Christchurch earthquakes. – an estimated 300 kilometers of network in Christchurch has been rehabbed with lining products. It should be noted that Christchurch lining design criteria of having a fully deteriorated host pipe, in fluid soils in flood conditions, was never heard of in the world of lining up this event.

6 Limited only by Pipe Material
Renewal Comparison Methods Method Diameter Impacts Application Pipe Material Gravity Pressure Open Cut I, S Limited only by Pipe Material PVC, PE, MSCL, DICL, GRP, Composites Pipe Bursting Up to PN25 PE, Restrained Joint PVC Slip Lining L PE, PVC Relining (CIPP, Fold & Form, Spiral Wound) M CIPP up to PN12 PVC, Proprietary Reinforced Soft Liner & Resin Combinations Close Fitting PE (Compact Pipe, Swage, Sub-line, etc) Up to PN12.5 PE Legend: I = Increased, S = Size for Size, L = Larger Reduction, M = Minimal Reduction With everything there are limits to methodologies. Basically ling is no good where you want to increase capacity of a service. Structural properties will vary between products with fold and form and spiral plastic being constrained to manufactory process, whereas CIPP can be made to design.

8 Fold and Form PVC  structural lining system to ASTM1504
 service life in excess of 50 years  uniform wall PVC pipe construction  no joints  installed in intimate contact to the pipe  no annular spaces behind the lining - Today we are going to discuss PVC fold and form and a installation project in Cashmere Christchurch.

9 Fold and Form PVC – Cashmere Project
3 Line 150mm Lines In the bush Step gradient Limited access Behind Properties   Equipment Access Manholes US DS - 3 x 150mm lines spanning around 160 meters, down a step gully behind flash houses Access was down a narrow drive way some 300 meters long The plant and equipment used for PVC fold and form is a large steam generator (1x 6 wheeler truck) 1x hydraulic winch and associated generator, power pack etc ( 2nd 6 wheeler truck) and a platform carousel (1x ute and trailer) Additional a robotic cutter unit is also required

10 Fold and Form PVC – Cashmere Project
Special Trolley System Adjustment of crane system - A special trolley was design and build to get the carousel down the bank and a crane truck modified. We wanted to remove as many person from the moving and placing the product on site With all lining it’s the access and placing of plant and equipment the provide the challenge. The process and procedure of lining is not complicated and is very repetitive.

11 Fold and Form PVC – Cashmere Project
Hangi on! Steam use to heat coil   - We eased the carousel down with the crane truck and only had to shimmy the carousel a little to get in-between the flowers.

12 Fold and Form PVC – Cashmere Project
Feeding Time - It takes about minutes to heat the PVC coil to a malleable state to feed into the host pipe. - Once this is achieved the product is able to move through bends and manhole channels

13 Fold and Form PVC – Cashmere Project
Feeding Time Once through to the other side, expansion plugs are inserted into both ends ready for expansion The product cools slightly when feed into the host pipe, so some time is taken to heat the product to a malleable state again

14 Fold and Form PVC – Cashmere Project
After a feed its time to expand! Note slight over expansion of the Fold and Form EX pipe which confirms complete expansion & also mechanically ‘locks’ lining into place. Once the product has reached a malleable state and the outside of the product has reached the desirable temperature the DS value is closed off and the expansion process begins The steam raises the temperature insider the EX creating pressure which expand the pipe It is held and certain increments to ensure full expansion along the entire length of pipe Once full expansion is achieved air rapidly replaces the steam and the cool down period begins

15 Fold and Form PVC – Cashmere Project
All done – satisfied! - Once cool down has finished hours then the cutting open of junction and end seals are completed

16 Fold and Form PVC – Cashmere Project
Summary of wins Health and Safety issues minimised Pull throughs - reduce set ups (movement of equipment) Less disruption to home owners Environmental friendly Only reinstatement in manholes (end seals) Cashmere Team won SICRT Environmental, Health and Safety and Quality Award
