3 The first College of Advanced Technology in the UK.
About PROCAT The first College of Advanced Technology in the UK. Did you know? The largest apprenticeship provider in Essex. The college has three campuses in Basildon, Canvey Island and Ilford. There are around 2,000 students studying at the College including over 850 apprentices. PROCAT was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in 2017 and was praised for the quality of teaching, personal development of students, apprenticeships and outcomes for students.

An Aerospace Engineering technician will repair and service existing aircraft An Aerospace engineer will plan and supervise the assembly and fitting of aircraft and components An Aerospace engineer will research new ways to make fuel-efficient parts.

7 Aerospace engineer Aerospace engineers work at the forefront of technology to design, build and maintain aircraft, space vehicles and satellites and the parts and instruments that go into them.

8 An Aerospace engineering technician can repair and service satellites.
An Aerospace engineer will collect and analyse test data, then improve the design. An Aerospace engineering technician can repair and service satellites. An aerospace engineer will carry out ground- and flight-testing programmes on prototypes

9 Is this you? Interest in aircraft and flight technology
Good practical hand skills Like maths, science and IT Good communication skills Problem-solving skills Methodical Attention to detail Teamworking skills

10 Rail Network Signaling technicians maintain and repair the signaling systems on rail networks. Rail track maintenance workers inspect, repair and maintain railway tracks, bridges, tunnels An electrical engineer will work with high and low voltage equipment in the transport networks, including rail electrification and signaling

11 One of the 7 wonders of the Modern world

12 Is this you? Excellent maths, science and IT skills
The ability to analyse complex problems and suggest solutions The ability to explain design ideas clearly Excellent teamworking and people skills Strong decision-making skills Excellent communication skills Good organisational skills The ability to manage a budget

13 Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings
Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings. They can work in many areas, for instance on construction sites, fitting out shops and bars, and building sets for film and TV. . As a furniture designer you’ll produce designs for mass-produced furniture, furniture made in small batches or unique pieces. You’ll need plenty of creative ideas, good drawing skills and the ability to use computer design software. Kitchen fitters install kitchens in homes and businesses Many kitchen fitters will have qualifications in other trades such as joinery, plumbing or electrical installation.

Bricklayers build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework. If you have a flair for engineering and building, you could have a career as a civil engineering technician. In this job you would provide technical support to civil engineers on construction projects A plumber will service air-conditioning and ventilation units A plumber will install water supplies, heating systems and drainage As a civil engineer you would plan, design and manage a variety of construction projects.

Carpenters Joiners Electricians Plumbers Site managers Architects

18 Is this you? Be a civil engineer A flair for maths and science
Good problem-solving skills The ability to understand engineering drawings and principles IT skills for computer aided design (CAD) work Good organisational and supervisory skills Teamworking skills Good communication, presentation and negotiating skills. Be a civil engineer

19 Why work in construction or engineering?
Skills gap Opportunity for self employment/owning own business Excellent earning potential May lead to working overseas Contribute to cultural & historical legacy The average age these days of a construction worker, be it a carpenter, an electrician or a brick mason is 47. This means that the industry is in dire need of some new workers entering the field. If the average age is 47, this means in less than 15 years those workers will be eligible for retirement, if not sooner. The world will always need new buildings erected, so the skills of construction person will always remain in demand. Self employment – benefits of working for yourself, being your own boss but also make aware do not get paid for holidays, sickness etc Contribute to cultural & historical legacy e.g. Olympics stadium and can be proud of building a structure that hopefully will still be standing in many years time Construction industry is forecast to pick up by 2017 particularly as UK is short by million houses so trades involved in domestic housing will be needed. Also, other projects in the pipeline are HS2 rail project and Thames Gateway.
