A description of how it should look Details of what it has to do /be
3 (a) Explain what is meant by: a design specification; and a manufacturing specification. Specification: A detailed description of how something should be done, made, etc: It includes a list of features and standards that your product should meet. A detailed specification is best set out as a list of bullets points as specific points. Examples are: A description of how it should look Details of what it has to do /be Materials ingredients, and joining methods Details of size/weight Environmental Safety points to consider Financial constraints

Manufacturing specification: A manufactures specification can be written as a series of statements, or working drawings and sequence diagrams. It has to explain exactly how the product will be made, and should include: Clear construction details explaining exactly how each bit’s going to be made; Sizes precise measurements of each part; Tolerances the maximum and minimum sizes each part should be; Finishing details any special sequences for finishing; Quality control instructions where, when and how the manufacturing process and product quality should be checked. Costing how much each part costs, and details of any other costs involved.

All parts to be within 2mm of drawing sizes.
b) You have been asked to write a manufacturing specification your chosen product. For your chosen product: state five categories to be included in a manufacturing specification state one specification point for each category. Category 1 SAFETY Category 2 TOLERANCES Specification point Specification point No small parts (less than 35 mm) No finger traps ( gaps lees than 6 mm or more than 12 mm) No items which could allow entanglement No sharp edges All parts to be within 2mm of drawing sizes. Category 3 Materials Specification point Economics Category 4 Made from Aluminium Specification point Cost no more than £ …

Modelling using 3D software Using excel to analyse costs
(a) Explain one way in which ICT could be used during the testing of your chosen product. Modelling using 3D software Using excel to analyse costs Testing of materials (b) Complete the table below to describe how each of the types of software listed could be used during manufacture: Type of software Description of use during manufacture Word Processor Spreadsheet Web Browser CAD Program Creation of literature for the production, selling and advertising of your product Creation of graphs from questionnaire results. Costing your product. Research of existing products, competitors materials etc. Production of drawings part lists for manufacture.

makes the product appeal to customers.
Question 3 (a) (i) State one design feature of your chosen product and explain why it makes the product suitable for its intended purpose. Design will be made flat pack using knock down fitting (Bolts and Nuts) which will be designed for easy quick assembly and disassembly . (ii) State one design feature of your chosen product and explain why it makes the product appeal to customers. No finger traps – Safe to use. Well constructed/strong - Durable, good life expectancy. Lightweight materials - Easy to transport Knockdown fitting so it can be assembled and dissembled very quickly

Adding patterns/colour Adding more doors or windows
(b) (i) State one improvement that could be made to your chosen product and explain how it will improve the appearance of the product. Adding graphics . Adding patterns/colour Adding more doors or windows (ii) State one improvement that could be made to your chosen product and explain how it will improve the customer appeal of the product. Use of environmentally friendly materials – consumers more aware of environmental issues could be persuaded. Improved choice of colours (c) State two modifications that could be made to your chosen product that will reduce the cost of its manufacture. Reduce the size of the design to reduce the cost of material Use of recycled materials Set up CAD/CAM for the manufacture

(a) For your chosen product:
Question 3 (a) For your chosen product: • name two materials/ingredients/components that can be used during its manufacture; and • state one property of each material/ingredient/component that makes it suitable for use. Neoprene coated Nylon - abrasion resistance and tear strength , water resistant, UV resistance that are also resistant to mildew, solvent, grease and some acids Titanium - low density and is a strong, lustrous, corrosion-resistant, does not rust. (b) State two reasons why manufacturers often disassemble a product made by another company. Investigate what materials have been used Investigate what construction/manufacturing processes have been used Investigate what finishes have been used

Most products are packaged for sale.
Question 3 Most products are packaged for sale. (a) Give three different reasons why your chosen product should be packaged. Protection – damaged goods will not sell Promote – use the package to advertise your product in order to improve/increase sales Preserve – keep it clean and tidy (b) Name a suitable material from which the package could be made. Corrugated board (c) What properties does this material have that makes it suitable? CORRUGATED BOARD - This type of board is often used for packaging large electrical items. These large boxes (often brown in colour) protect the contents from damage. Corrugated board is strong because it is composed of a top and bottom layer and in between there is a triangulated section. A triangular section is very strong compared to its weight. Easy to bend and print on ,cheap

Made from recyclable material. Environmentally friendly.
(d) Suggest an alternative material for your package that has similar properties to the material you have specified in (b) above. CARDBOARD - is thicker than paper as it is made up of a number of layers, glue or laminated together. The diagram opposite shows a net / development of a package. It can be folded to produce a carton. SOLID WHITE BOARD - This is normally top quality cardboard made from quality bleached wood pulp. It is the best card for printing on to and consequently it is used for hard backed books and more expensive items. Easy to bend into shape, easy to print on to, made from recyclable material, bio degradable and environmentally friendly. Question 3 continued (e) State two ways in which packaging can be made more environmentally friendly. Made from recyclable material. Bio degradable. Environmentally friendly. Renewable sources
