1 Are You Ready? SSH Accreditation and Certification
Juli Maxworthy SSH Accreditation Committee Chair Incoming Secretary, SSH Board of Directors

2 Objectives Define certification and accreditation.
Identify common sources of certification and accreditation in healthcare simulation. Consider the pros and cons of healthcare simulation accreditation and certification.

3 Definitions Accreditation Certification
to recognize or vouch for as conforming with a standard a process of validation that an institution is compliant with standards Certification official approval to do something professionally or legally confirmation of certain characteristics of an object, person, or organization

4 Accreditation

5 SSH Accreditation The Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) recognizes organizations or groups with dedicated resources (personnel and equipment) whose mission is specifically targeted toward improving patient safety and outcomes through assessment, research, advocacy and education using simulation technologies and methodologies.

17 Standards of Accreditation vs Standards of Best Practice

18 INACSL Standards of Best Practice
Standard I – Terminology Standard II – Professional Integrity of Participant(s) Standard III – Participant Objectives Standard IV – Facilitation Standard V - Facilitator Standard VI – Debriefing Process Standard VII - Participant Assessment and Evaluation Standard VIII - Simulation Enhanced Interprofessional Education (Sim-IPE) Standard IX - Simulation Design

19

20 INACSL Criteria for Debriefing
Facilitated by a person(s) competent in the process of debriefing. Conducted in an environment that is conducive to learning and supports confidentiality, trust, open communication, self-analysis, and reflection. Facilitated by a person(s) who observes the simulated experience. Based on a structured framework for debriefing. Congruent with the participants’ objectives and outcomes of the simulation-based learning experience. 5 criteria Clin Sim Nursing (2013) 9: e26-29
