3 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific
Brief about Mongolia Population – 2.7 mln. 1.5 person/km2 Located between Russia and China Far from ocean Continental climate Average temperature 25C in summer, -20C in winter From 1990, collapse of socialism 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

4 Air pollution in Ulaanbaatar
Population of Mongolia≈ 2,754,685 Population of Ulaanbaatar ≈ 1,798,147 (65%) 251,758 families live in UB 61,4% (154,644 families) live in “Ger” district It implies that there are 154,644 coal fired furnaces in UB! One conservative calculation estimated that approximately one in ten deaths in UB is attributable to outdoor air pollution!

5 They use those furnaces only to produce heat in wintertime(October to March)!

6 Present status on nuclear energy
2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

7 Energy mix in Mongolia Coal power plants provide a 79.8% of total electricity demands.

8 Energy demand would be increased two or more times by 2025
Small population, limited water source, no natural gas resources in Mongolia Estimated uranium resource has reached to tons by now Nuclear energy could be one of the best solution! 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

9 Government decision in past
The strategy of the Government for utilization radioactive minerals and nuclear energy ( Mongolian Parliament) The law for nuclear energy ( ) The Government program for the implementation of the strategy for utilization radioactive minerals and nuclear energy ( Mongolian Government No222) 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

10 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific
Steps for nuclear power program (The Government program for the implementation of the strategy for utilization radioactive minerals and nuclear energy ) Step 1 ( ): legal environment, nuclear power program, human resource development program, preliminary study for research reactor Step 2 ( ): introduction of RR, feasibility study for NPP Step 3 ( ): to build NPP, training and education system Step 4 (from 2021): start NPP 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

11 The reactors that can be utilized in Mongolia
Medium size reactors up to 600 MW (can be connected to central power network, to provide basic load of the network) Reactors with several hundred MW: to provide energy of small cities with population of people Small sized reactors of tens MW: to provide energy demand for local places far from power network 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

12 Nuclear HRD tentative plan (developed by NRC)
HRD Plan 1: for Research Reactor: In total 48 persons will be educated in 12 specialties between 2010 and 2020. 33 for Master degree, 15 for Doctor degree HRD Plan 2: for Research Reactor + NPP: with 2 versions (100 Mwe and 500MWe) *not included number of craftsmen and technicians In any case, we have to have sufficient human resource (at least 400 professionals in nuclear field) 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

13 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific
In June, 2012, Mongolian Parliamant election The government changes The policy also changes Anti-nuclear movement because of Fukushima accident and some information from Mainichi shinbun about radioactive waste burial in Mongolia Focus on utilization radioactive minerals 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

17 Graduates in Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Technology
Scientific researchers Analysts in laboratories such as environmental, geological and forensic laboratories Engineers in radiation control Engineers in nuclear medicine Physics teacher in secondary and high schools 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

18 Future objectives for nuclear HRD in Mongolia
To establish national education system for nuclear engineering : To develop curriculum for bachelor, master, doctor degree in nuclear physics and nuclear technology, nuclear engineering To train graduates and workers in nuclear field especially in nuclear and radiation safety To provide young researchers and lecturers study abroad To pay an attention in nuclear education at secondary and high schools To carry out some activities to elevate public knowledge in nuclear physics and technology 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

19 Feasibility Study of Research Reactor
Research Reactor can be base for establishing national education and training system on nuclear engineering used for: educational and training purposes in Mongolia: to educate and to train students. activation analysis of geological and environmental samples, production of short and middle-lived medical isotopes, possible studies on neutron radiography possible studies on material science, 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

20 Main strategy for Nuclear HRD
National education and training system on nuclear engineering is necessary to be established in Mongolia. First, to educate researchers and lecturers who will work at the Universities as leading scientists Next, to educate and train workers, engineers who will work at NPP later on 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific

21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific
HRD plan for RR First person will be graduated in 2012, the last one will be in 2020. 7 persons in each year Totally 48 persons will be educated in 12 specialities between 2010 and 2020. 33 for Master degree, 15 for Doctor degree 2012/11/21 International Conference on Nuclear HRD in Asia and Pacific
