S3 Broad General Education Learner Pathways
Prestwick Academy 31st January 2017 S3 Broad General Education Learner Pathways This will be the first time pupils have made significant changes to their own Learning pathway currently they take 12 subjects and they now will reduce that to 9. Whilst there is choice we still talk about this as the broad general education.
2
What do we want for our young people?
Some young people know exactly where they want to go after school what we want to do is find their area/ find what they are good at! hopefully leading to a career. Not everyone is good at everything but by making the right choices pupils will gain the best set of qualifications they can.
3
Employer Engagement Part of my remit is DYW and as such I regularly work with partner agencies to look at gaps between what employers are looking for and what we can do to fill these gaps.
4
Only 29 per cent of employers recruit directly from education.
Developing the Young Workforce - December Scottish Government publication More than 50 per cent of school leavers don’t go to university. Very few gain industry relevant vocational qualifications while still at school. Only 29 per cent of employers recruit directly from education. Only 13 per cent of employers have Modern Apprentices. Even as the economy continues to recover, youth unemployment continues to be a challenge and is a major social and economic issue. So what we want to do it send pupils out with good qualification as well as a set of skills will benefit them
5
What do businesses & employers think?
Young people can pass exams but lack some important skills More apprenticeships Bigger emphasis on work placements Practical skills required – Engineering – can you wire a plug? Transferable skills & qualities for life and work important – communication, working on own, group work, adaptability, ability to learn applied skills, happily do any tasks given, learn from mistakes Things to improve – time management Often what comes back is skills More hands on experience apprenticeship experience /work placements Technical skills Transferable skills working with other people Being on time ready and prepared to work

Remember this? Remember this? Asked pupils at S4/5 Assembly, none of them knew. But where are we now?

Always looking for improvement
Now, most young people have smartphones. If we did not continually seek to improve, we would still be using Walkman's. In education, we cannot rest on our laurels. We need to continually seek improvements in our curriculum that meet the needs of our current learners and prepare them as best we can for life in the 21st century. We also need to respond to current trends, advances in technology and the need for a skilled and diverse young workforce.
