So you want to go to college… According to the Chronicle of Higher Education and Higheredinfo.org 4-Year Public Colleges. PA sends 60.9 % to college right after high school PA Freshman Retention Rate (returning as sophomores) 80% PA graduates 62.9% of those students in 6 years with a Bachelors degree. Those are 4 year public schools. 11th Nationally. More Perspective: In 2013 43,861 students in PA 62.9% graduated in 6 years 16,668 did not graduate in 6 years! According to U.S. News and World Report, 1 in 3 students do not return to college after the first year As many as 1 in 3 first-year students won't make it back for sophomore year. The reasons run the gamut from family problems and loneliness to academic struggles and a lack of money. If schools you're considering have low freshman retention rates, you'll want to ask the admissions office why. *PDE website

Thoroughly look through the profession/career profile page. Check out what skills and personality traits are important in that profession. Find out how much education is needed for the profession. Take a look at the average salary for the profession. Check which word is associated with the profession: Bright Outlook, Green, and Registered Apprentice.

See if you can do any of these during high school: Take relevant courses during high school Job shadowing or Internships: (Schedule an appointment with Mr. Hoffman) Volunteer (see our website/guidance bulletin board Go to field related conferences (many in the summer) Talk to professionals in the field Bring Your Child to Work Day As many as 1 in 3 students do not return to college after their 1st year* 1 shadowing experience = 32% higher retention rate in college** 1 internship experience = 52% higher retention rate in college** *US News and World Report ** Vincent Tinto’s research on Retention Rates
