Directorate - functions
organises and manages the National System for Ecological Monitoring which monitors harmful emissions in air and water, ambient air quality, surface and ground water, soils, forest ecosystems, biodiversity and protected areas, hazardous waste, and the ionization and non-ionization impact of the environmental
is responsible for the development of the NSEM subsystems; - creates and maintains data base containing information on the environmental components;
carries out analyses and assessments of the state of the environment;
issues periodical Bulletins and Annual Bulletin for the State of Environment;
develops, implements and maintains modern technological solutions on the base of Remote Sensing and GIS for Spatial visualization And analysis of environmental information;
collects, process and reports information to the European Environment Agency;

Directorate’s functions
comprises analytical laboratories for analysis of air, water, soils and waste, accredited according to EN ISO/IEC 17025:1999, providing environmental data to the National Monitoring System and carrying out environmental control within the MoEW and analysis in cases of accidents;
possesses sophisticates modern equipment and highly qualified staff for automatic and instrumental method of analysis;
organizes the operation of automatic stations for air control and supports the technical systems;
is responsible for method development and validation for sampling and analytical control in accordance with the European Union requirements;
harmonizes the Bulgarian Standards in the field of environmental pollution control with European and International Standards;
provides management to the Regional laboratories;
takes part in international programs and international intercalibration activities

- hierarchic structure of regional and national databases
- automated connection for data exchange between regional and national databases
- the databases on both levels are structured by environmental components, with possibility to integrate information
Monitoring data are provided by the RIEW to the ExEA either via WAN network or via Internet
