Why do we have Induction in Wales?
Consistency in structure and support Flexibility within different patterns of employment High quality experience for the NQT Fair and equitable process Rigorous and consistent assessment
8
The induction period All NQTs must complete an induction period of
Three complete terms for NQTs on a full time contract 380 school sessions for NQTs employed on a part time or temporary contract 380 school sessions for NQTs undertaking short term supply
9
Where can induction take place?
Maintained schools in Wales Non maintained special schools in Wales Independent schools in Wales where The curriculum for any primary learner meets NC requirements The curriculum for learners at KS3 or 4 includes all core and foundation subjects An agreement has been reached prior to the start of the induction period between the school and the LA that they will act as the AB FE institutions where the institution is able to provide an NQT with an appropriate post to enable them to undertake their induction
10
Registration In Wales it is a legal requirement that all NQTs must hold QTS and be registered as a school teacher with the EWC in order to be employed as a teacher in a maintained school An induction period cannot start until the NQT holds QTS and is registered with the EWC Any issues with this phone the EWC on – registration team

12
The statutory induction arrangements
The arrangements for statutory induction for ALL NQTs in Wales is a collaborative process between the NQT, the induction mentor (IM), the external verifier (EV) and the Appropriate Body (AB) or the LA induction co-ordinator We are all in this together….
13
The NQT NQTs should take responsibility for their own professional learning and demonstrate how their practice meets the professional standards. They must: ensure they use the professional standards and the Professional Learning Passport (PLP) to regularly reflect on their practice and capture experiences for mapping against the standards using their induction profile
14
The NQT Record a range of professional experiences
Identify development priorities Inform their head teacher/supply agency they are an NQT Log all their sessions with the EWC Inform the EWC if they move schools during their induction period or if their contract changes
15
The head teacher and school
The head teacher and the school as a whole ensure that there is day-to-day support available to the NQT throughout the induction period as part of the school's overall mentoring arrangements. The Internal Mentor (IM) works on behalf of the HT of the school and should be suitably qualified and have the necessary experience to carry out the role.
16
The Induction Mentor (IM)
The Induction mentor IM provides day-to-day support to the NQT They work with the EV to ensure the NQTs receive high quality mentoring and supervision They provide a recommendation to the AB on the outcome of the induction period. IMs will usually be based in the same school as the NQT but may also be deployed across a number of schools or work with a group of supply teachers.
17
EAS Professional Learning Offer

18
The External Verifier (EV)
The EV quality assures the induction arrangements on behalf of the AB and works with the IM and AB to ensure NQTs receive high quality mentoring and supervision. The EV makes the recommendation to the AB on the outcome of the induction period. All EAS EV’s have undergone Leadership Development Coaching & Mentoring training
19
The employment or supply agency
Where NQTs undertake some or all of their induction through supply teaching the employment or supply agency, as the NQT’s employer, provide the necessary support to their NQTs to reflect the nature of their deployment across different schools and to ensure that safeguarding and pre-employment checks are undertaken when placing NQTs in schools.
20
The employment or supply agency
The employment or supply agency must ensure they understand the role of the new professional standards for the purposes of induction and must ensure their NQTs are familiar with the new standards and have access to professional experiences that enable them to demonstrate the full range of induction descriptors.
21
The EWC The EWC has responsibility for collecting, collating and maintaining a central source of data for NQTs undertaking induction and for administering induction funding to schools, working closely with regional consortia. EWC also hosts and provides access to the online statutory induction profile via the Professional Learning Passport to enable NQTs to reflect against the relevant professional standards and record their professional experiences.
22
The AB The AB has overall responsibility to ensure that induction meets the statutory requirements and uses assessment evidence to make the final decision on the induction outcome. For maintained schools and non-maintained special schools, the school’s local authority (LA) must serve as the AB. However an LA, in practice, may agree to delegate its role to the relevant regional consortium which is responsible for the recruitment, training and deployment of EVs.
23
Regional contacts and sharing of information
For further information about mentoring, contact the consortium: Central South EAS GwE ERW
24
The Welsh Government The Welsh Government sets regulations and policy and specifies national priorities for professional learning. It works with regional consortia and the EWC to monitor and review national arrangements. For further information visit learning.gov.wales and search for induction guidance

The five standards
31
What the new standards mean for Induction?
The values and dispositions set out what it means to be a member of the teaching profession in Wales. So let’s have a quick read…
32
The five standards represent the ability of the NQT to demonstrate their competence to teach by the end of Induction. Let’s read the five standards…
33
The five standards summarise the expectations of an effective practitioner. Therefore NQTs successfully complete induction when they satisfy the 5 standards and use the descriptors to demonstrate this. So, by the end of Induction NQT’s need to be able to demonstrate their ability to meet the five standards and IM’s EV’s and the AB need to be able to give assurance that the NQT can achieve these standards. What do we think?
34
The descriptors for the standards
The descriptors re-frame the expectations for all teachers and leaders from Sept 1st 2017 to achieve the above standards. So let’s take a look specifically at the descriptors which will help us achieve the standards by the end of our Induction period.
35
How will we demonstrate the standards in practice?
What experiences have you had already which you can discuss with your Induction Mentor (IM)? Feedback…. NQT’s will demonstrate experiences which include all the descriptors during their Induction period.
36
What else will provide experiences during this academic year?
The regional NQT Professional Learning Programme; A four day programme for all NQT’s which provides you with The opportunity to collaborate with a group of NQT’s from a range of settings The opportunity to observe experienced practitioners in your phase and subject The opportunity to work with practitioners in a Pioneer School who are trialing, testing and developing elements of the new curriculum and developing Professional Learning using the WG Professional Learning Model The opportunity to have your Induction period accredited with 30 M-Level credits working with our HEI partner the University of South Wales.
37
The days of the programme;
The first three days of the programme follow a twilight given by your Host school and happen in the Autumn term. Day 1 focuses on Pedagogy (Refining Teaching)… Day 2 focuses on Pedagogy (Advancing Learning)… Day 3 focuses on Pedagogy (Influencing Learning)… Day 4 (half-day)focuses on how the other standards support Pedagogy and is hosted by USW. Day 4 (half day) Evaluation of the year Day 5 (full day) NQT conference at Cardiff City Stadium – collaboration with Central South
38
EAS/Central South regional NQT conference
The Conference will be held on the 4th of July at Cardiff City Stadium. Key note speakers - Sir John Jones, Mick Waters and Kirsty Williams (Cabinet Secretary) Workshops on Hwb and delivery of a Successful futures curriculum 150 places for EAS NQT’s No cost.
39
How do you access the programme?
Through the EV Allocation Process; Lead school (Rhiw Syr Dafydd) receives notification of NQTs within region from the EWC. Lead school considers best placement for NQTs, taking into consideration previous working relationship between the NQT’s school and EV and the proximity of NQT’s school to host school. EWC are informed of allocations. EVs are provided with contact details for NQTs and IMs. EVs will make contact and invite NQTs and IMs to a twilight session to start the process.

Collection of experiences
Experiences are reflective accounts of what you’ve done to demonstrate the descriptors from the standards. Questions to talk about; What are experiences? When should we reflect? How often should we record? How are they reviewed? Who reviews them?
