1 Spring 2009 Energy Conservation Campaign
“Turn Me Off” Staff Council Spring 2009 Energy Conservation Campaign January 14, 2009

2 Why UCCS is concerned with energy conservation
Today’s talk Why UCCS is concerned with energy conservation Cost External Commitments and Executive Orders What UCCS is doing to conserve Facilities operations Office energy use What you can do Single Stream Recycling and RecycleMania

3

4 UCCS Utility Costs UCCS Utility Bills range between $1.7-1.84 million
Electricity is ~60% of utility bill Natural gas = 25-30% Water and Waste Water = 10% Utility Forecasts for Feb. 2009 ( a moving target) No increase in natural gas 40- 45% increase in water rates 8-10% increase in electricity

5 Overall, energy efficiency in UCCS buildings is increasing

6 American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment
Complete an emissions inventory Within two years, set target date and interim milestones for becoming climate neutral Take immediate steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by choosing from a list of short-term actions Integrate sustainability into the curriculum and make it part of the educational experience UCCS one of the charter members to sign commitment 498 chancellors and presidents have signed the commitment All of the CU system has signed

7 UCCS 2007 Emissions

8 Colorado Greening of State Government Executive Orders
Goals for state agencies by June 30, 2012: 20% reduction in energy use 20% reduction in paper use 10 % reduction in water consumption 25% volumetric reduction in state vehicle petroleum consumption

9 Reducing carbon emissions
57 percent of ghg emissions reductions can come from energy efficiency. About 43 percent can come from renewable sources of energy including solar, wind, bio-fuels, biomass and geothermal. Chuck Kutscher, NREL

10 What is UCCS doing? Lighting retrofits
Delamping where appropriate (footcandles measured) LED Exit signs Timers installed in hallways Photocell sensors Toilet retrofits Purchase of 2 new hybrid patrol cars Energy Star purchasing policy Building Automation System to match heating and cooling with occupancy

11 What is UCCS doing? Commitment to high energy performance in new buildings Heat Recovery in Science Engineering Ice Storage to reduce peak demand charges Solar thermal Rec. Center swimming pool Photovoltaic system – Science Engineering Mandatory Utility Containment Committee Potential transition of custodial crew to day shifts

12 Building Electricity Use
Campus Services Building

13 Electric :: kWh Usage (Building Totals FY2007)

14 Sample Office Energy Use
Coffee maker - $38 per year (2.5 hours/day) Portable Heater - $30 per year Lighting - overhead - $26 per year Micro refrigerator - $25 per year Screensavers do not save energy and in fact may use more energy Computer using sceensaver – Watts Computer set to sleep or standby – 1-6 Watts How to set: Control Panel-Power Options- Monitor 20 minutes, Hard disk 30 minutes, system – 2 hours

15 Be an energy hero – make saving energy your personal passion
What Can You Do? Be an energy hero – make saving energy your personal passion Always turn office and classroom lights off Turn off computers including monitors every night Turn off the monitor if you aren't going to use your PC for more than 20 minutes Turn off both the CPU and monitor if you're not going to use your PC for more than 2 hours. Turn off printers and copy machines every night Use daylighting whenever possible Use task lighting with compact fluorescents or LEDs Dress appropriately to cut down on personal heaters

16 What Can You do? 7. Turn off coffee makers – share coffee makers
8. Share a larger refrigerator rather than buying your own 9. Consider putting all appliances on power strip Outlet = 15W Power strip = 1-3 Watts (Save 2% of energy bill) Always look for the Energy Star label when purchasing appliances Contact Facilities Services with ideas or reports of energy waste –

17

18 Single Stream Recycling Program
Place all recyclables in one container. Candy Wrappers Food-Soiled Cardboard Food or Organic Waste Liquids Plastic Bags & Wrap Styrofoam Used Paper Cups & Plates Used Paper Towels Used Tissues Waxed Cardboard Waxed Paper Wet or Soiled Paper Carpet or Cloth Aluminum & Tin Cans Plastic Containers #1-7 Glass Bottles & Jars Cardboard Boxes White & Colored Paper Phone Books Brochures & Pamphlets Envelopes & Junk Mail File Folders Magazines Books & Manuals Brown Paper Bags Paperboard Recycle Trash these! these! Talk about entire program. Why, what it will looks like, switch to custodial, increase in recycling rates. Landfill Re-use

19 RecycleMania January 18 – March 30, 2009 Final stats 2008
Recycling 131,079 lbs. Waste 289,919 lb. Recycling rate 25.95% Waste minimization – 23rd among public schools – 50 lbs of trash per person for 10 weeks Goal 2009 40% diversion? 50% diversion?

20 January 21, 2-3:30 University Center atrium
Next Steps Building representatives - energy “heros” Staff Council Energy Campaign and RecycleMania Kickoff – Ice Cream Social January 21, 2-3:30 University Center atrium Monthly feedback on energy performance Ideas???
