1 HISTORY 3.1.2 Foreign affairs and colonial expansion
British Empire: formed by India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. By the end of the 19th century, the British Empire covered almost one fifth of the globe and comprised a quarter of the world’s population.

3.2.1 Home affairs In 1948, the Labour government provided Britain with a system of social security and medical care covering everyone in the country (the Welfare State)

3 HISTORY After Mrs Thatcher became Prime Minister as the leader of the Conservative Party, she reduced the overlarge powers of British trade unions (sindacati) and embarked on a programme of denationalisation. She supported private enterprise and initiated cuts in public expenditure, especially social services. As a result, British economy started to recover.

4 HISTORY 3.2.2 Foreign affairs
British soldiers fought in World War I ( ) on the side of the Allies. Britain was not prepared for World War II ( ). In 1940, Britain was left alone to fight Germany and its allies, but it managed to defeat the German attempt to bomb it until the victory in 1945.

5 HISTORY The British Empire changed into a voluntary association of independent states, called the British Commonwealth of Nations, between ; the adjective “British” was dropped in the 1960s. The Commonwealth comprises over 50 members at present. In 1973, Britain joined the European Union, though it has not accepted the Euro as its currency yet. It is now leaving it: Brexit

6 HISTORY 3.2.3 Economy In the first half of the 20th century, Britain lost its position of economic superpower.
