Origins of the Non-Aligned Movement

Formation of NAM Founded in Belgrade in 1961
Conceived by India's first prime minister, Nehru; Indonesia's first president, Sukarno; Egypt's second president, Nasser; Ghana's first president, Nkrumah; and Yugoslavia's president, Tito. All five leaders were prominent advocates of a middle course for states in the developing world between the Western and Eastern Blocs during the Cold War.

NAM’s Current Role 120 current countries Represents 2/3 of UN members and 55% of the world population. Membership is particularly concentrated in countries considered to be “developing” or part of the Third World Since the NAM formed as an attempt to thwart the Cold War, it has struggled to find relevance since the Cold War ended. Many of the members of the Non-Aligned Movement are also members of the United Nations. Both organizations have a stated policy of peaceful cooperation, yet the successes the NAM has had with multilateral agreements tend to be ignored by the larger, western and developed-nation dominated UN

Members and “observer” countries

NAM’s Current Goals Criticism of US policy: Invasion of Iraq, War on Terror, attempts to restrict Iran & NK’s nuclear plans Self-determination of Puerto Rico & Western Sahara Sustainable development: issues with globalization, debt, unfair trade and decline in foreign aid UN reforms: critical of UN structure, power dynamics, lack of transparency in decision-making Human Rights: protect cultural diversity

NAM’s effectiveness in the Cold War
