3. The Election of 1876
Rutherford B. Hayes was running for the presidency
with the Republican ticket (for Reconstruction)
Samuel J. Tilden was running for the presidency with
the Democratic ticket (against Reconstruction)

4. Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote, but the
electoral vote was too close (by 20 votes) and
controversial for a win for either party
There were 3 states that were disputed (Florida,
South Carolina and Louisiana) because they were
Southern states still controlled by the Northern
Republicans

5. A Decision To Be Made A special commission, with an equal number of
Democrats and Republicans, was created by Congress to
decide the outcome of the election.
The commission decided that Hayes would win.
The decision had to be agreed by Congress, but
Republicans controlled the Senate while the Democrats
controlled the House of Representatives.

6. If both houses did not agree by Inauguration Day, then
the decision would be made by the House which was
controlled by the Democratic Party
The Republicans could not let this happen, they decided
to make a compromise

7. Hayes Becomes President

found it difficult to exercise their
