1 The Compromise of 1877 and the
End of Reconstruction

2 Main Topic The Compromise of 1877 was a political
compromise that helped end Reconstruction The Compromise of 1877 also led to Hayes becoming president The end of Reconstruction led to the rise of powerful Southern Democrats The end of Reconstruction was the point where many of the rights given in that era were taken away The affect of the end of Reconstruction would last for decades

3 The Election of 1876 Rutherford B. Hayes was running for the presidency with the Republican ticket (for Reconstruction) Samuel J. Tilden was running for the presidency with the Democratic ticket (against Reconstruction)

4 Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote, but the
electoral vote was too close (by 20 votes) and controversial for a win for either party There were 3 states that were disputed (Florida, South Carolina and Louisiana) because they were Southern states still controlled by the Northern Republicans

5 A Decision To Be Made A special commission, with an equal number of
Democrats and Republicans, was created by Congress to decide the outcome of the election. The commission decided that Hayes would win. The decision had to be agreed by Congress, but Republicans controlled the Senate while the Democrats controlled the House of Representatives.

6 If both houses did not agree by Inauguration Day, then
the decision would be made by the House which was controlled by the Democratic Party The Republicans could not let this happen, they decided to make a compromise

7 Hayes Becomes President
The compromise was that Hayes would become president of the United States The compromise also would remove the remaining Republican military in the South This effectively ended the Era of Reconstruction Rutherford B. Hayes

8 The Decline of Reconstruction
The Compromise of 1877 formally ended Reconstruction The military that occupied Louisiana, Florida, and South Carolina withdrew Southern Democrats came back into power and tried to recreate the “old south” African-Americans did not achieve equality. They continued to face racial violence and most found it difficult to exercise their rights. These are African-American politicians from the era of Reconstruction
