PROCEDURE: Pick a Packet from the Welcome Table. Pull a Number for your Seating Assignment. Please Find the Attendance Board that matches the Beginning Letter of your Last Name. Put a Green Card that has Your Name on it in a Pocket—indicating you are present. Choose a classroom ‘job’ on the Job Stick by clipping the clothes pin with your name on it to your selected ‘job’ for the day. Remember your ‘job’ because you may be called upon to ‘perform’ it today. Quietly find your Table and BE READY TO LEARN!

Role Play (sometimes you will be ‘the student’). Direct Instruction (you are familiar with this mode from college classes). Modeling and Guided Practice (in each instance, we will model a skill or strategy for you—then you and your ‘table groups’ will work collaboratively to generate additional strategies). *TAKE NOTES: This handout will become a valuable ‘bank’ of ideas to access when you become a teacher!

The more students are involved in procedures, the better! Remember, all human beings (that includes your students!) desire to BELONG AND TO ESTABLISH SIGNIFICANCE. Empower your students to contribute to their own classroom community. Consider the strategies modeled here for you today and learn about other strategies from your colleagues.

OUT OF CLASS PASS It is the educator’s first duty to keep children safe. This includes knowing where they are at all times. Believe it or not, there is much debate over the most effective way to provide students with bathroom passes, library passes, etc… Consider those modeled here for you today and learn about other strategies from your colleagues.

GROUPING PROCEDURES AND STRATEGIES
First think about WHY you are getting students into small groups. 1. Do you want to group students together for instruction around common weaknesses? 2. Do you want students with weaker skills to benefit from peers with stronger skills? 3. Do you want random grouping so that students don’t always work with familiar friends and therefore learn different working styles and strategies?

For Random Groupings Consider playing cards, shape organizers, ‘counting off,’ puzzle-match up, compound word match and grouping by student interests. Take notes on the strategies modeled here for you today. Take notes on other strategies shared with you by those sitting at your table.

Interrupting Sticks Children who have difficulty with impulse control may benefit from teacher-facilitated ‘approximations to the goal.’ For example, if a student typically has his ‘card pulled’ in the first ten minutes of every day, teacher can implement a personalized strategy, “Try this, Roy, each time you forget to raise your hand, give me one of your popsicle sticks. If you have at least one left before recess, we’ll celebrate, if not, you’ll turn your card. Good Luck, Roy! I’m ‘rootin’ for you!”

Peace Path If you teach all your students to resolve interpersonal conflict on a tactile-kinesthetic tool (Primary), then when conflicts between children arise, teacher can send them to work on the ‘Peace Path’ or ‘Peace Bridge.’

Find a partner. One of you get markers. The other get 2 roles of butcher paper and find a space on the floor to work together designing two peace paths.

1. Help your partner fold butcher paper in half. 2. Write the four ‘ground rules’ on each end of the paper. 3. Then, write the word ‘listen’ on one side and the word ‘tell’ on the other. 4. Repeat reversing the words. 5. Write ‘wants & willings’ on both ends of the paper. 6. Finally, write the word, ‘Solutions’ in the middle (on the fold). 7. Make sure you both take home your PEACE PATHs for future use in your classrooms.
