11 Office and Commercial “Plug Loads”
The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that in today’s offices, “plug loads account for up to 20% of the electricity bill, and that share is likely to rise (2011 report). Commercial plug loads are the fastest growing end use, projected to increase at a rate more than double that of other loads (more than 2% per year and more than 60% in total) between 2010 and 2030.” In commercial office buildings, computers and monitors account for the majority of plug load electricity use (66%). The remaining plug load use can be attributed to non-PC business equipment (18%), imaging equipment (13%), and computer peripherals (3%). While these electronics and devices consume less electricity when put into “Idle”, “Standby”, or “Sleep” modes, they still continue to draw a small amount of “phantom” load unless effectively or physically unplugged. According to the 2003 US Energy Information Agency chart from this presentation, computers, office equipment, and other devices account for as much as 20% of an office building’s electrical consumption, through their combined plug loads and phantom loads. According to the US Department of Energy, 75% of the current consumed by common electronics is used while the equipment is actually idle, off-duty, but still plugged in.
