1 DAILY JOURNALING: A CREATIVE WRITING MUST
"I am not at all in a humor for writing; I must write on till I am." --Jane Austen

2 The Book Get a notebook you feel comfortable with. *Recommendation: Composition book* Carry it with you daily (if possible, everywhere you go!). You will need the “real” notebook with you in class by Monday, September 11.

3 Some Rules for Journaling

4 “Rule” #1 We journal every day. Try for about a page. If you are absent, you must still account for the day. I will check your journals every couple weeks or so. I will be looking for those two things: about a page of writing, a page a day. If you were absent, you will journal without us.

5 “Rule” #2 Use a pen or pencil that “writes well” for you. Are you a ballpoint pen person? A dull pencil person? Do you like to write in color? Do you like something different every time?

6 “Rule” #3 MOST IMPORTANT RULE:
It is OK to write junk! It is OK to write junk! It is OK to write junk!

7 “Rule” 4 You do not need to write about or in response to the prompt. The prompts are helpful to, you know, prompt. They’re helpful to make you stretch. But, if you want to write about something else (or, if you’re absent on a particular day), write about whatever you want/need.

8 Journal Format Journal #___ General Subject or Prompt Date
_______________________________________________________________________

9 Your first journal… Write about a time when you had to struggle with writing. This could be for school, for fun, for an event, etc. OR Write about a time when you had no struggle with writing. This could be for school, for fun, for an event, etc. Anything you feel like writing… even junk.
