Caceres Dec. 5 – Dec. 16 Holidays Around the World Activity: Display and present/play games on holidays that are celebrated in December. A book display as well as daily activities/games on the different holidays celebrated in December will be on going in the library. The holidays Kwanza, Hanukkah, Christmas, and Las Posadas will be the focal holidays. Month of December Guessing Game Activity: To attract attention to the book display students will participate in an estimation game with December theme Students will be asked to estimate how many snowflakes are in the jar. At the end of the month the student with the correct guess will win the jar of “snowflakes” or marshmallows. 1-11 Author Preview Activity: Preview visiting author’s books Rene Colato Lainez books will be used for book talks and read to the students in order for the students to become familiar with the visiting author and will create questions that they may ask the author.  Dec. 7th Author Visit Activity: Author visits our school. Award winning author Rene Colato Lainez will visit our school and share his multicultural books. Through a PowerPoint presentation, he will share his childhood memories, his life as an immigrant in a new country, and his success as a published author. Christmas Candy Guessing Contest Contest: Fun activity to encourage literacy and library visits Students will guess how many candies are in a large jar. Winner wins the jar of candy December 5-9 Author Visit Author Visit by Rene Colato Lainez Our campus will host an author’s visit by Rene Colato Lainez, author of various children’s books. Dec. 5 – 9 Author Visit Presentation Using a powerpoint presentation, the author, René Colato Laínez will share his most intimate journey beginning with his childhood in El Salvador, and then as an immigrant in a new country, his life as a teacher and his success as a published author. Book display and promotion will create awareness of the season and holidays/important days being celebrated during this time of the year. Nov. 28-Dec. 4 Learn about Digital Resources Library Lesson Students will learn how to access digital resources such as eBooks and databases through the use of MackinVia. Dec. 8 Author Visit-The Teacher with Many Stories Author Visit Students will enjoy listening to visiting author – Rene Colato Lainez. He will talk to students about his books, becoming a writer and his multicultural experiences. Dec. 2 Winter Festival Activity: Board Games and Video Games Students will be participating in board games and video games in the library. Dec. 16 Book It! Pizza Hut Activity: Students who meet their reading goals get rewarded. A personal pan pizza voucher is given to all students who meet their AR goal by the end of the month. A.R. Celebration Activity: Students come and have lunch in the library. A celebration for all students that have met their A.R. goal for the 3rd 6Weeks. Students will come in to watch a movie while they enjoy their lunch with the librarian. Snacks will be provided. Ongoing Guessing Jar Activity: Estimation game for all students to participate. Just for fun: A jar with goodies is displayed in the library monthly and carries on a holiday theme. Students are allowed to guess how many goodies are in the jar. At the end of the month, the student with the correct or closest amount wins the jar with the goodies.

He will read one of his books to PreK-5th grade students and discuss how he became an author. 12/8/16 Academic Outreach Community Outreach Runn Elementary staff members will meet with students and their families in their neighborhoods after school. Stainke Elementary Dec. 5 – Dec. 16 Olive the Other Reindeer/Sneezy the Snowman Activity: Create a reindeer directed drawing and create a melted snowman 3rd-5th grade students will listen to story Olive the Other Reindeer and learn facts about reindeers and will create a reindeer by following directions and PK- 2nd grade will listen to Sneezy the Snowman and use glue to create their melted snowman and do writing activity Dec. 16 AR Fun Time Activity: Students who meet their reading goals get rewarded. Students will be rewarded for reaching their AR goal. They will be able to play with board games and make and take art crafts. Students who fill out card will receive an award. Also Christmas centers will be available for students to enjoy. 12/13 Book Club Meeting The Reading Club will get together to celebrate the holiday and decorate cookies while we discuss business and books. The Book Club is a way for the library to celebrate an event in a student’s life such as; reaching 1st semester educational goals, meeting A.R. Reading goals, good behavior, good sportsmanship, or making new friends – there are many reasons to celebrate with books! This program also helps promote the lifelong love of reading. 12/1-12/15 Christmas Coloring Contest Community Involvement Coloring helps in the following way: Bilateral Coordination, Fine Motor Coordination, Self-regulation, and Self-Esteem. It also allows the parents to interact with their child. The three top students winning the contest will receive a gift card from Barnes and Noble. 12/9 Author Visit Rene Colato Lainez will present to our students. Authors include “Inside information concerning character development, plot, and why an author chooses to go in a certain direction.” We also want to support local authors, and inviting them helps students to further embrace the spirit of literacy and its connection to writing. 12/10 DISD Showcase Parade Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year
