Genesis 21 – The son of promise
Hosea 12 verse 10 God speaks to us using similitudes Acts 17 verses 22-34 God needs nothing God does not need us God is not someone with whom we can barter or that we can win over Conversely God is someone we need Someone from whom we need to hear Someone who is loving enough and gracious enough to speak to us And He uses similitudes – Genesis is rich with them!

Isaac Jesus Birth foretold – Genesis 18 Named before birth – Gen 18 Born as a result of divine visitation – Gen 21 v 1 Born to a woman unable to conceive – Gen 21 v 2, Heb 11 Foretold a considerable time prior to birth – 25 years Name given by divine intervention to mother, applied by father Isaiah 7, 9 and elsewhere Matt 1 v 21 & Luke 1 v 31 Luke 1 v 26 & following and Matthew 1 v 18 Isaiah 7 & Luke 1 as already shown 2000 years (Gen 3) and other periods Matt 1 v 21 and 25

The son of the flesh has to go when the son of promise takes up residence When we are born of God we are a new creation – 2 Corinthians 5 v 17 The son of the bondwoman has to go when the son of the freewoman is born Galatians 4 V 23 It was for freedom that Christ has set us free – Gal 5 v 1 Isaac would be the source of freedom to the world – the line of the Messiah Jesus would be the source of freedom for the world Matt 1 v 21 (saved from sin)

Galatians 3 v 29 We who believe are all Abraham’s seed Galatians 4 v 21 – 31 The process of finding Christ is one of ousting the son of the bondwoman and allowing the son of the freewoman to set up home. It was grievous to Abraham to oust the son of the bondwoman But God’s exhortation was to be pleased The road to promise can be painful but ends in glory In Isaac shall your seed be called Remember we are ‘the seed’, called through Abraham’s seed (Christ) If I be lifted up on the earth I will call all men to myself – John 12 v 32

Prophetic fulfilment God heard the voice of the lad I will make of him a great nation Gen 17 – twelve princes shall come from him The firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth, and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, and Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedmah. These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns and by their encampments; twelve princes according to their nations." Genesis 25:12-16 Also given in 1 Chronicles 1 v 29-33 Ismael had an Egyptian Mother and then went to Egypt for a wife Some of the Arab nations descended from Ishmael A wild ass of a man whose hand will always be against his brother
