3. Where Did It Come From?
Developed in Cambridge Univ, UK – still nonprofit
Purpose – provide students a very low cost platform to learn about computers and software
Hardware and software is all open source i.e. free, distributable and able to be modified; NOT proprietary
Original goals ~ 10,000 units in 2-3 years
1 Million sold!! in first year (Feb 2013)
2 Million sold Oct 2014

No VGA output
No on-board realtime clock, uses internet Time via NTP or external RTC daughterboard
No on-board DAC, unlike Arduino, Beagle Bone Black
Doesn't run MS Windows
GPIO is unbuffered, uses 3.3v, NOT 5v tolerant!!!!
20+ I/O, many dual purpose (I2C, SPI, UART, sound PWM)
