2 CBIE is… The Canadian organization dedicated exclusively to international education A non-profit, non-governmental membership organization Bringing together nearly 200 members (colleges, cégeps, institutes, universities, school boards and language schools) Present from coast-to-coast, at all levels, bilingual Partnering with a vast array of stakeholders (government departments, private sector, sister organizations in Canada and around the world)

Canada and Brazil co-operate closely in the areas of science and technology; research and development; innovation and education Canada-Brazil Framework Agreement for Cooperation on Science, Technology and Innovation (2008) Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Mobility and Scientific Cooperation (2010) Joint Committee for Cooperation on Science, Technology and Innovation (2011) Canada-Brazil Science and Technology Working Groups (2011) Canada-Brazil Science and Technology Action Plan Focused on Innovation (2011) Canada’s International Education Strategy (2014) includes Brazil

Recognizes international education as a priority sector Includes the following as components: Foreign students studying in Canada (focus) Canadians studying outside of Canada Collaboration between educational and research institutes in Canada and abroad Sharing Canada’s education models with foreign countries Online delivery of Canadian education around the world Brazil is a priority country Some federal government funding available

Examples of CBIE managed initiatives: Government of Brazil: Ciência sem Fronteiras (CsF): Undergraduate Program: Since 2012, CBIE has placed nearly 5,000 undergraduate students in universities across Canada Doctoral program: Full PhD program, PhD Visiting Student program & Postdoctoral program Government of Canada: Canada-Brazil Joint Research Awards: 17 projects since 2011 The Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP): Scholarships: 648 since 2009 (+100 est. to be awarded in 2015) Collaboration Missions: 9 senior Brazilian HEI administrators

Canada-Brazil Alumni Event: an annual gathering and networking opportunity in Brazil for Brazilians who have studied in Canada. Social Media (LinkedIn, FB). Several missions to Brazil each year to foster strategic partnerships Network of research foundations, the Canada-Brazil Chamber of Commerce (Toronto, Canada) and the Câmara de Comércio Brasil-Canadá (São Paulo, Brazil)

CBIE/Tri-Councils Research Collaboration Mapping “Tracking Canada-Brazil Research Collaboration and Opportunities” Objective: to outline and consolidate the various research funding avenues and opportunities that exist in Canada for research collaboration between Canada and Brazil Phase 1: Identifying joint research and funding entry points in Canada Phase 2: Anticipated use of information collected in Phase 1; develop a consolidated map and single platform of funding opportunities information for joint Canada-Brazil research projects
