4 Pearl Harbor The 7 December 1941 Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor was one of the important moments in history. A single carefully-planned attack removed the United States Navy's battleship force as a possible threat to the Japanese Empire's southward expansion. America, was weakened and brought into the Second World War as a full combatant.

5 The Japanese Empire Eighteen months earlier, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had moved the United States Fleet to Pearl Harbor as a deterrent to Japanese aggression. The Japanese military, fighting in the almost endless war it had started against China in mid-1937, for badly needed oil and other resources. In July 1941 the Western powers halted trade with Japan. From then on, as the desperate Japanese planned to take the oil rich East Indies and Southeast Asia, a Pacific war was unstoppable.

7 Indonesia The Japanese occupied the archipelago in order, like their Portuguese and Dutch predecessors, to take its rich natural resources. Japan's invasion of North China, which had begun in July 1937, by the end of the decade had become stuck from the strong Chinese resistance. To feed Japan's army, petroleum, iron, and other resources had to be imported from foreign places. Most oil--about 55 percent--came from the United States, but Indonesia supplied 25 percent.
