1
Demonstrating Improvements
Control Kaizen Facilitation
2
Objectives Understand the importance of demonstrating implemented improvements with before and after data Become familiar with different ways to display data To visually demonstrate improvement
3
Baseline Data Initial collection of data which serves as a basis for comparison with the subsequently acquired data Captured during the Measure Phase Used to identify improvement opportunities during the Analyze phase Consists of inputs and outputs of the process Compare Before and After
4
= Final Data Baseline vs. Final
Must be the same data points collected as the baseline data Must be collected the same way, at the same times, by the same people = Baseline vs Final
5
Displaying the Improvement
Final data must be compared against the baseline data… before and after comparison Demonstrates improvement or change within the process in a manner that is easily understood by all Generally done using graphs, charts, or tables that show side-by-side the change that has taken place as a result of the project
6
Displaying Data – Line graph
SPC graph showing baseline data compared to final data, demonstrating improvement Built in Minitab with help of your Mentor
7
Displaying Data – Bar Chart
Demonstrating side by side comparison of annual revenues, expenses, and profit/loss Simple bar graphs from Excel are fast and easy to build 2010 2009 2008
8
Displaying Data – Bar Chart
Demonstrating side by side comparison of daily start-up waiting times (minutes to first move) after Kaizen team improvement efforts
9
Displaying Data - Table
Side by Side comparison of baseline data to demonstrate difference in services Simple table built in Excel (KEY: more is better (+), i.e. MPH)
10
Review Baseline data and final data must be collected in the same way to achieve an ‘apples-to-apples’ comparison Data must be displayed visually/graphically to best demonstrate the improvement Use the graph, chart, or table that best conveys the improvement
