10 Kingdom Marriage by Tony Evans
Teammates May 7, 2017 Lee Bennett

11 Beginning with the end in view
Tertullian, one of the early church fathers, offers wisdom: “How beautiful, then, the marriage of two Christians, two who are one in home, one in desire, one in the way of life they follow, one in the religion they practice Nothing divides them either in flesh or in spirit They pray together, they worship together, they fast together; instructing one another, encouraging one another, strengthening one another. Side by side they visit God’s church and partake God’s banquet, side by side they face difficulties and persecution, share their consolations. They have no secrets from one another; they never shun each other’s company; they never bring sorrow to each other’s hearts Seeing this Christ rejoices. To such as these He gives His peace. Where there are two together, there also He is present.” (

12 Session #1: Finding God’s Purpose for your Marriage
The main point: “When you treat your marriage as a covenant with God, everything else—including love, happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment—will fall into place.”

13 The Gathering: the marriage game
Pair up with another couple to form teams of four. Ask one person from each couple to take a turn answering a question as you call it out. The catch is, each person must answer on behalf of his or her spouse. Ready? Here are the questions:

14 Marriage game questions
When did you first meet your spouse? Where did you meet? What is your wedding anniversary? What is your least favorite household chore? What is your favorite anniversary celebration? What is your favorite leisure-time activity?

15 Table talk questions If someone had asked you, on your wedding day, what the purpose of marriage is, what would you have said? Who or what influenced and shaped your view of marriage--for better or worse?

16 DVD: Finding God’s Purpose… (26 min)

17 Your True Purpose A kingdom marriage is defined as “a covenantal union between a man and a woman who commit themselves to function in union under divine authority in order to replicate God’s image and expand His rule in the world through both their individual and joint callings.”

18 Responding to Tony’s message
Which words best describe your reaction to this definition of marriage as God intends it to be? In one sentence, express the emotion hitting you right now. Overwhelmed; excited; unprepared; optimistic; confident; curious; desperate; doubtful; willing; ashamed; thankful; eager; ready; other: ……..

19 “Let us make man in our image (mirror)…and let them rule (expand)…” Gen. 1:26
How would our world be different if all couples took their kingdom marriage covenant seriously?

20 Areas of conflict you have experienced
Finances; sexual intimacy; parenting style; friends; family; personal habits; priorities; expectations; household responsibilities; unresolved issues from the past; personality conflicts; substance or other abuse; time apart; other? What role has Satan played in these problem areas?

21 Human reasoning vs. God’s revelation
How has your marriage been influenced by human reasoning—specifically: The homes you and your spouse grew up in? Unhappily married family or friends? Portrayals of marriage online, in movies, TV, etc.? The culture you live in? Why do we try to put a marriage together without reading God’s “instruction manual?”

22 Wrap up What does it mean to glorify God? To glorify Him in and through our marriages? “Glorify”—to exalt, lift up, reveal, shine forth, give the honor due Him, to enlarge, make great. Psalm 34:3 “O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.” NASB

23 Personal/Couple Questions for reflection & Discussion
What is your favorite “date night” activity? What would change in our marriage, home, and circle of influence if we committed to a relationship that actively sought to mirror God and expand His rule in the world? What battle strategies has Satan used to hinder God’s work in us? What specific steps could we take to prevent the influences of the world from overshadowing God’s revelation in His word?
