1 COMPOSTING WHIRLIN’ WATERS

2 WHY IS COMPOSTING IMPORTANT?
Composting reduces the amount of food going into the landfill. Food is allowed to breakdown into compost. Helps the environment by reclaiming a valuable resource. Lengthens the landfill’s lifespan. Returns this “black gold” to park to give plants nourishment. Creates awareness.

3 Composting Timeline June, First met with Charleston County Recycling to discuss recycling efforts. July, 2011 For the first time, composting was discussed. Oct, 2011 Received Visual Waste Assessment Report from Charleston County Recycling. Dec, 2011 Reviewed Visual Waste Assessment Report with CCR. Jan, 2012 Made decision to compost. Feb, 2012 Researched product choices. Mar, 2012 Designed Compost Bin. April, 2012 Received Design Review approval. April, 2012 Followed procurement process. May, 2012 Began Compost Program.

4 Conversion of Product Line
Began process of determining what products we regularly used. Determined if regularly used products were compostable. Researched alternative products to replace regularly used products that were not compostable. Committed to making the transition complete. Continue to research to find less expensive products.

11 BID PROCESS Determined possible haulers for the compost from approved list furnished by Charleston County Recycling. Called each of the vendors (See list) and determined that 3 of the companies were not interested in bidding on the hauling. Met with Fennell Container and Fisher Recycling who were willing to bid, but were going to use Food Waste Disposal for the actual hauling. Received low bid from Food Waste Disposal and submitted to Procurement.

18 LONG TERM IMPACT Helps make customers aware of the importance of taking care of what we have. Makes us more aware of the value of recycling cardboard, bottles, cans and other recyclable materials. Provides us with another way to use recycled products within our park system. Reinforces public image of CCPRC. Provides marketing opportunities. The ultimate cost of composting was clearly offset by the free publicity that we received.
