-Hint: Think about the animal heads on the wall. Think about how the house is hidden in the middle of an island. Think about Ivan the butler answering the door with a gun.

4 Plot and Conflict What will the main conflict of “The Most Dangerous Game” be? How does conflict create a plot of a story?

5 I. Literary Characters In literary works, characters must tell each other and the reader about their ideas and feelings. The way that the characters in a story interact (behave) with each other is a big part of telling the story. Through their words and actions, the story comes alive.

6 Main Characters These are the most important characters in the story
Who are the main characters in “The Most Dangerous Game?”

7 Dynamic Characters Usually, main characters are dynamic
This means that they change or grow during the story

8 Rounded Characters Rounded characters have a variety of characteristics that you can get to know about them, just like real people.

9 Minor Characters These characters may have a connection to the main character or may be complete strangers. They are in the story because they have a connection to the plot. Who was a minor character in “The Most Dangerous Game”?

10 Static Characters Minor characters may be static. Static characters do not change.

11 Flat Characters Flat characters are almost always minor characters. You only know a few key facts about them.

Development of characters is one of the tools that authors use to give their story meaning. EVERY CHARACTER serves a purpose! Example: In Disney’s Hercules, Meg is Hercules’s love interest. Not only does she make him fall in love, but her love leads him to a heroic

17 Character Roles Narrator- The person telling the story.
First Person point of view: The character is involved in the story. This point of view often expresses the character’s feelings and ideas. Third Person point of view: The narrator is NOT in the story. We learn about characters from an outside voice Omniscient and Limited Omniscient Points of View A narrator who knows everything about all the characters is all knowing, or omniscient. Limited: A narrator whose knowledge is limited to one character, either major or minor, has a limited omniscient point of view.

18 Protagonist The main characters. Specifically, the ones who the plot follows. The main character is not always the good guy. Who is the main character of “The Most Dangerous Game?”

19 Antagonist An opponent, rival, or obstacle to the protagonist.

20 Foil A character who is the opposite of another character. Often the main character. Are Rainsford and Zaroff each other’s foils? Why or why not?

21 III. Characterization Characterization is the process by which a writer develops a character. Sometimes a character is described directly to the reader and sometimes the reader has to gather clues about a character based on the actions and reactions of the characters

22 Character Traits Description- The author can tell you how the character looks, dresses, how old they are, etc. Dialogue- conversations between two or more people. We can make decisions about characters based on their dialogue. Actions- Sometimes the actions of a character speak louder than words to show the character’s true self.

23 Direct/Explicit Characterization
The text comes straight out and tells us details. This kind of characterization takes a direct approach towards building the character. It uses another character, narrator or the protagonist himself to tell the readers or audience about the subject.

24 Indirect/Implicit Characterization
You must use the clues given by the text to figure out the characterization. The author does not directly tell you about the character.

She gently knelt down and stretched out her hand to help her friend return to her feet after her friend fell on the field. Direct or Indirect?

He chortled heartily before deeply puffing on his high end Cuban cigar, briefly glancing at his Rolex. He announced his driver would arrive at any moment, then tossed back the rest of his high end scotch. Direct or Indirect?

27 What kind of person are we describing?
She answered the door in a hurry, still putting her earrings in and telling me to come in for a moment. I entered what looked like an abandoned war zone with clothes and shoes scattered across the floor, dirty plates with crusty tomato sauce and hardened fettucini noodles dusted with old crumbs of buttered bread piled on the table, and magazines piled haphazardly on every spare surface.
