1
Answer the following question in your binder….
What are some things in your life that need to be organized? Why is it necessary to organize things? Defend your answer.
2
LIFE IS ORGANIZED…. And categorized by the organisms that are most closely related to each other. Scientists do this to study the way that organisms have evolved and also how they live together. It is essential for the study of all organisms.
3
The Five Kingdoms or are there?
Monera Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia The old model
4
The OLD Model
5
The NEW Model
6
Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes
Eukaryotic Organisms Contain a true nucleus with DNA Contain membrane bound organelles Multicellular or Unicellular Examples: Fungi, Animals, Protists, Plants Prokaryotic Organisms Contain no nucleus Free-floating DNA Contain no membrane bound organelles Unicellular Examples: Monerans (bacteria)
7
The Bacteria Kingdom (Monerans)
Divided into Archeabacteria and Eubacteria Archeabacteria is EXTREME Bacteria. Eubacteria is common bacteria. Most Bacteria do not have a nucleus Single-celled Don’t make their own food. Feed on other organisms or a host organism. They don’t move on their own Prokaryotic
8
The Protist Kingdom (Protozoan)
A combined animal-like and plant-like organism Some contain Chloroplasts Some make own food. Little “creatures” floating in a drop of pond water. Single celled. Most have a nucleus. Eukaryotic
9
The Fungi Kingdom Fungi Can’t move. Can be anywhere. Multicellular
Cells have a nucleus Eat and recycle dead organisms Examples are mold or mildew. Eukaryotic
10
The Plant Kingdom Plants are food for animals.
They contain chloroplasts Make their own food They cannot move unless they’re growing Nucleus and DNA Multicellular Eukaryotic
11
The Animal Kingdom Exhibit Locomotion (able to move from place to place). Multicellular (many cells) Cells contain a nucleus Don’t make their Own food. Eukaryotic
