An Exploration of Lake Kosumi
Let’s Go Fishing! An Exploration of Lake Kosumi

Lake Kosumi Lake Kosumi contains 3 different types of fish Trout Bass
Whitefish

Essential Questions for Today
If you catch a single fish at Lake Kosumi, what is the probability you will catch a trout? A bass? A whitefish?

Brainstorm a Plan What do you need to know in order to answer the question? Is it possible to individually count the number of fish in a lake? How do you suppose biologists estimate the total number of fish in a lake without counting each and every fish?

Things to Think About If a portion of the lake’s fish were tagged, how could that help you answer today’s questions? What data could you collect that would help? What size samples would you collect? How would you track, display and analyze the collected data? How many samples would you collect before feeling confident in your answers?

Tool You Can Use Fortunately, Idaho Fish and Game recently tagged a portion of the Lake Kosumi’s population of fish. You have access to their data HERE:

Explore the Tool Use the simulator available HERE: to determine: How many fish were tagged How many of each type of fish were tagged What the “Resample” size and button do for you.

Carry Out Your Plan Collect, display and analyze your data in order to answer today’s essential question: If you catch a single fish at Lake Kosumi, what is the probability you will catch a trout? A bass? A whitefish?

Visualizing Your Data How can you display your data in a way that supports your conclusions? (E.g. box plot, histogram, line plot, etc.) Display your probability conclusions in two different ways (E.g. area model, pie chart, tree diagram, etc.)

Share Your Results Plan to share your results with the class. Be sure to include: Your method for collecting data (sample size and number of samples used) A description of how you organized and analyzed your data. Visual displays for both your collected data and the probabilities you determined. Your answer to today’s questions.

The Big Reveal …! *note* Right Click on Pie Chart to Change Chart Type.

Extension Questions Suppose you “catch and release” fish. This means you catch a fish and then return it, alive, back to the lake. What is the probability that if you catch and release two fish: Both are bass? Exactly one is a whitefish? Neither of them are trout? One is a trout and one is a whitefish? The first is a trout and the second is a whitefish?
