34 The sermon sets an impossible standard
“Unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!” — Matthew 5:20.

35 The sermon sets an impossible standard
“Unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!” — Matthew 5:20. “Be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.” — Matthew 5:48.

36 “Nice idea, but not a realistic way to live”

37 “Nice idea, but not a realistic way to live”
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” — Matthew 7:24-27.

38 It makes us realise we are not perfect
“Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins.” — Galatians 3:19.

39 Are we just condemned to always fail?

40 The key is a new identity
What we do flows from who we are. When God wants to change our behaviour, he first transforms our identity. This is right at the heart of what being a Christian is.

41 “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new
person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17.

42 “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new
person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17. “Even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.” — Ephesians 2:5.

43 “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new
person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17. “Even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.” — Ephesians 2:5. “You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ.” — Colossians 2:13.

44 “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new
“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20.

45 “Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new
“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20. “Unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” — John 3:3.

46 “Unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
— John 3:3.

47 God's grace is not only for salvation
“How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” — Galatians 3:3.

48 Saved by grace but living by law?

49 Saved by grace but living by law?
“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” — Galatians 2:20.

50 Saved by grace but living by law?
“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” — Galatians 2:20. “So now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world? You are trying to earn favour with God.” — Galatians 4:9-10a.
