2. Simple Past
Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific time in mind.

3. Simple Past I saw a movie yesterday. Last year, I travelled to Japan.
Positive Form: Subject + the past form of the verb + the object( s )
I saw a movie yesterday.
Last year, I travelled to Japan.
She washed her car.

4. Simple Past
He called his friend in Rome yesterday. Tom played football. I studied French when I was a child. He left the company many years ago. Suzan bought a new car in May.

5. Simple Past
To form the past tense of regular verbs, add –ed to the base form of the verb. e.g. kill – killed visit – visited If the base form ends in e, add only –d: Love – loved Like - liked

6. Simple Past
If the base form ends in a consonant followed by the letter y, change y to i and add –ed. Marry – married Study – studied Apply – applied Supply - supplied

7. If the verb has only one syllable and ends in one vowel and one consonant DOUBLE the consonant and add >> ed Stop >>> stopped Plan>>> planned

9. Simple Past
Note: the simple past tense of be is was or were, and of have/has is had.
Negative form:
We use didn’t + infinitive ( without to )
Subject + did + not + base form of verb + object (s)
e.g. They didn't expect to see you at
the party.
She didn't understand the question.

10. Simple Past
Question form:
We use did + infinitive ( without to )
(Wh?) + did + subject + base form of the verb + object(s)
e.g. Where did you study French?
When did you arrive?
Did you do your homework?

11. Yes /No Questions:
Did +subject+ base form of the verb + object e.g. Did you like the film ? Yes, I did. Did they enjoy the party ? No, they didn’t. Did she answer the last question in test? Yes, she did.

14. Pronunciation of –ed Ending
1- If the last sound in the base verb is /d/ or /t/, -ed is pronounced as a separate syllable: /Id/. e.g. wanted, decided, invited, Or Needed.>>>/Id/. 2- if the last sound in the base verb is /f/,/k/, /p/,/s/,/sh/,or/ch/ -ed is pronounced as /t/. e.g. worked /t/

15. Examples of /t/ Endings for Past Tense Verbs
"laugh" becomes "laughed" and is pronounced "laugh/t/" (one syllable)
"walk" becomes "walked" and is pronounced "walk/t/" (one syllable)
"kiss" becomes "kissed" and is pronounced "kiss/t/" (one syllable)
"finish" becomes "finished" and is pronounced "finish/t/" (two syllables)

16. 3- The final –ed is pronounced /d/ after base verbs ending in all other consonants. Examples: she travelled /d/ around New York. “clean" becomes "cleaned" and is pronounced "clean/d/". "dream" becomes "dreamed" and is pronounced "dream/d/“.

17. If the last sound in the base verb is a vowel, –ed is pronounced /d/
If the last sound in the base verb is a vowel, –ed is pronounced /d/. "enjoy" becomes "enjoyed" and is pronounced "enjoy/d/“. "marry" becomes "married" and is pronounced "marry/d/"
