How one could have become a leader in old Europe?
Born to be a king Win a war Join the Mafia
4
But Europe has changed since those days:
The kings lost their power The generals lost the wars The Mafia is (mostly) in jail
5
And Leadership was given to the common people
6
And Leadership was given to the common people
7
(Warren Bennis, a leadership guru)
What is leadership? “Leadership is like beauty. It is hard to define, but you know it when you see it.” (Warren Bennis, a leadership guru)
8
What are the main components of Leadership?
9
Can you acquire leadership skills?
Core skills are in the genes and in the way you were brought up as a child. Training can only formulate the leadership skills. Leadership is a combination of a number of characteristics, strengths and abilities: Confidence Resilience Vision Honesty Commitment Generosity Ability to communicate Sense of humor Ability to delegate Generosity Ability to inspire Risk taking
10
What makes a good leader?
11
Good vs. Great Leader
12
Leadership and Entrepreneurship
These are two different skills that are often being confused as one: “Innovation and entrepreneurship” thrive on chaos and out of the box thinking, usually by individuals “Leadership” results in better organization of group activities We need both to advance medicine
13
Leadership and Management
Leadership is not Management Leadership involves vision and then motivating others to follow the vision; dealing with changes from the original plan. Management is charged with keeping the plan on course within a complex organization. We need both to advance medicine
14
How to Become a Leader in the Field
Find a passion Be an innovator or partner with an innovator Ride that first horse and commit to it Once it has hit a significant milestone, consider using competitive technologies…… need to become a general expert in the area Be willing to travel…. A lot. Make sure you have a great team of people at home who can cover for you while you are on the road
15
How to Become a Leader in the Field
Leadership must be balanced with entrepreneurship What has not been accomplished before? How important is the innovation to the medical specialty and to the patient? Am I an entrepreneur inventor? Or can I be an entrepreneur by aligning and facilitating the inventions of others? Maybe they invent the device, but I invent the procedure? Maybe they invent the device and procedure, but I prove to the world that it works There are a number of avenues from which one can lead Take an honest inventory of your strengths and then apply them with zeal!
16
How to Become a Leader in the Field
Leadership must be balanced with management True leadership is not possible without good management You need to secure your base before you can innovate and reach for the stars Have I established a team at home that can cover the slack while I’m traveling? Am I satisfying the core commitments of my clinical position prior to reaching? Can I find an environment that allows me to reconcile both? Proper management of your base will allow room to innovate and reach for the stars When your innovative side is reconciled with your base….. This is when you can develop the power to be a leader in your field.
17
Leadership in Medicine: a Void
By its nature, medicine is one-on-one profession, physician vs. patient. However, we as physicians have additional responsibilities beyond our immediate practice where there is a call for leadership: Influence public policies Handle community relations Focus on prevention Lead professional associations Accelerate innovations in ever increasing regulatory barriers Address the Globalization of medicine Lobby the politicians on resources priorities
18
Both Europe and the US medical system require major overhaul
Europe vs. the US Europe is still more fragmented than the US, despite the EU Europe, like the US, is suffering from a void of medical leaders Both Europe and the US medical system require major overhaul Medical leadership
19
So the leadership void in Europe is no different than the void in the US. The World becomes flat and the medical leadership problem becomes global, crossing boarders and nationalities
