Psychology Fields There’s a ton of them!
Abnormal, Clinical, Cognitive, Comparative… … Community, Counseling, Developmental… Educational, Evolutionary, Experimental… …Forensic, Health, Industrial/ Organizational Legal, Personality, School, Social, Sports… + many others. You get the idea.

What kind of degree do you need?
It depends on what you want to do! Best advice: RESEARCH! … and research, and research… Here are some potential career examples with degree requirements and other useful information…

Social Worker Example from Asante:
“ Job Details: As a Social Worker with Asante Ashland Community Hospital you will provide services to patients and their families to enhance quality of life, social and emotional functioning while ensuring medically related needs are met and maintained. Work is often performed within tight time constraints. This position reports to the Director of Home Health - Hospice. In this role you may assist with the coordination and delegation of the work of the support staff. “ Education: Majority require a Masters of Social Work. Can assist in a variety of needs from counseling, advocating, educating and researching social problems. Other potential places of work: Mental health clinics, schools, nonprofit agencies, government offices, etc.

Clinical Psychologist
Example – Clinical Psychologist Position in San Antonio, TX: Qualifications: A Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctorate of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited psychology program. A current license to practice psychology in any one of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, and territory of the United States to include Puerto Rico, Guam, and the United States Virgin Islands. & other experience based qualifications in the field.

Clinical Psychologist [Cont.]
Example – Clinical Psychologist San Antonio Details: Assist the Mental Health division as the primary point of contact for record reviews following suicide attempts and completions Ensure all Air Force policies are followed for the mental health related care of the patient and report any deficiencies Track findings, identify trends, recommend process improvements, and create reports and present briefings to the AFMAO [Airforce Mortuary Affairs Operations] leaderships on lessons learned from suicide reviews. Create standardized templates, checklists, resources, guidance, and training for the AFMS on suicide risk assessment, management and treatment based on existing DoD and AF policies and clinical practice guidelines policies. Travel to conferences or meetings up to 25 days per year as directed by the mental health Contracting officer representative. Other potential places of work: Hospitals, privates practice, mental health organizations, legal settings, etc.

School Psychologist Education: Master’s Degree
Other Requirements: Completion of three-year program including coursework and internship hours. Passing of the Praxis II school psychology exam. Helps students succeed emotionally, academically and socially. Counsels teachers, parents and children. Applies behavioral management techniques and implements learning programs. Some places of work: Public & private schools, community agencies, universities and hospitals.

Therapist Education: Master’s or higher
Helps clients reflect on their issues and make positive changes, offers encouragement and listens, teaches coping skills, refers clients to therapies, communicates with other medical professionals. Potential places of work: Hospitals, nursing homes, schools, community settings, workplaces, etc.

Psychiatrist Education: MD (Doctor of Medicine) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) Other Qualifications: Complete a residency, become licensed and board-certified Medical doctors who assess and treat a variety of mental illnesses – can prescribe medication. Specializations can range from geriatric care, addiction, clinical care, child and adolescent, brain injury, hospice, etc. Places to work: Hospitals, private practices, mental health clinics, government, research facilities/universities, etc.

Health Psychologist Education: Many have a PhD or PsyD, although some do have a Master’s. Focuses on helping people live better lives. Helps people avoid illness and promotes healthy behaviors. Studies how psychological, biological, and social factors influence health. Some places of work: Hospitals, universities, health care centers, government agencies, etc. Other subfields: Clinical health psychology and community health.

Criminal Psychologist
Education: PhD or PsyD Develops psychological profiles of criminal suspects, studies why people commit crimes, helps police create criminal profiles Possible places of work: Government agencies, police departments, law firms, court houses, prisons, police stations, etc. (Also!) Forensic Psychology: Applies psychological theories to the the Judicial legal system

Industrial Organizational Psychologist
Education: Majority require Master’s or higher Involves studying workplace behavior, focuses on increasing workplace productivity and related issues such as the physical and mental well being of employees Organizational side — focused on understanding how organizations affect individual behavior Industrial side — involves looking at how to best match individuals to specific job roles Places of work: Private businesses, government agencies, schools, white-collar organizations

Human Resources Education: Bachelor’s or higher. Might need a certificate in HR. Conduct job evaluations and help with the hiring process, assist in development of policies and procedures, help identify management and employee’s needs/improves conditions with staff Possible locations: Businesses, schools, etc.

Management Education: Bachelors or higher
Lots and lots of possibilities! Psychology majors are often equip with great people skills and work ethics after they graduate which helps move them up ladders to management positions. Work locations: Businesses, nonprofits, human resources, politics, food industry – management can be found just about everywhere!

Childcare Workers & Teachers
Education: Bachelors or higher Shapes the lives of future generations! Cares for and teaches children (can range from many ages!), prepares activities, works with parents and professionals to create an effective learning environment Places to work: Childcare centers, after school programs, grade schools, special needs

Marketing & Advertising
Requires: Bachelors or higher Conducts interviews, performs opinion polls and collects data, determine target audiences, develops advertising materials Places to work: Marketing and advertising is huge! Just about anywhere.

Career Counselors Requires: Bachelors or higher
Helps people determine a fulfilling career choice, administers personality and interests inventories, assists in changing of careers, provides vocational rehabilitation to those returning to the workforce. Places to work: High schools, college, government agencies, private practices, etc.
