3 Engagement Operationally Defined
Engagement is a PROCESS by which teaching, research, practice and service are done that includes collaboration/ partnership with others (e.g. community/clients/organizations/groups) Jordan, C. (Ed.) 7 Engaged Teaching Community-Based Learning (CBL) or service-learning identifies a pedagogy that explicitly engages students in studying community issues in order to increase students’ understanding and application or academic content. CBL courses should include student learning outcomes concerning application of the concepts and skills of an academic discipline to issues in the community. CBL courses may integrate a broad range of teaching and learning strategies and structures including: Field experience (FE) Practicum (PR) Internship (IN) Capstone (CS) Research projects (RS) Clinical – healthcare (HC) University of Louisville Office of Community Engagement

8 Engaged service Engaged service is the use of one’s expertise to address a specific community issue. Such service may be connected to one’s teaching and/or research Colbeck, C. L. Michael, P.W.
