2 Next Review Session is: Tuesday 5/16 @ 3:15 PM
Date: May 16th, period 1 Aim # 78: How has technology and industrialization negatively impacted our environment? HW: RRB pages 9-18 due Friday Castle Learning (QUIZ #3) due next MONDAY Human Impact Test next Wednesday Do Now: Briefly describe how the following human activities have lead to a decrease in biodiversity… Deforestation Direct harvesting Imported species Next Review Session is: Tuesday 3:15 PM

3 Aim #78: How has technology & industrialization negatively impacted the environment?

4 1) What is Industrialization?
Industrialization is the development of an economy in which machines produce many of the products people use.

5 2) What is Technology? The use of scientific knowledge & technical processes to meet human needs.

6 3) What have been the effects of Industrialization & Technology on human population?
They have allowed for an enormous surge in population growth? a) Why? These machines & technologies have been able to meet the needs of more & more people.

7 4) What are the effects of these advances?
Solid Waste Disposal Thermal Consume More Resources Air Toxic Waste Water Pollution

8 5) Consumption of More Resources:
Industrialization increases the demand for energy, water, and other resources including fossil & nuclear fuels. a) What are the 3 main fossil fuels: Oil Coal Natural Gas b) What kind of resources are fossil fuels? Non-Renewable Help Generate Electricity

9 6) What is Nuclear Fuel? Nuclear fuel is an energy
source that results from the splitting of atoms. Help Generate Electricity **Nuclear power plants do not pollute the air or water with toxic chemicals Problems: Cause thermal pollution of waterways. Difficult to safely dispose of nuclear (radioactive) wastes .

10 7) Consumption of Water:
+ Most factories use a lot of water. This can lead to serious consequences for the native plants and the consumers that depend on them for food.

11 8) Types of Pollution: Water
Sewage, wastes from homes & factories, animal wastes from farms, & fertilizers can be disposed of in rivers, lakes, & oceans.

12 9) What are the effects of sewage & animal wastes in aquatic systems?
Eutrophication Sewage & animal wastes act as fertilizer & increase the growth of aquatic producers (very rapid). 2) Produce a lot of oxygen during the day (photosynthesis) and none at night. 3) Use all the oxygen at night. 4) Other organisms suffocate.

13 10) Pollution: Toxic Wastes
Toxic (poisonous) wastes can cause environmental problems because when they are disposed of they can collect in the cells of organisms. Mercury is a toxin that can be found in fish

14 11) Biological Magnification
The concentration of toxic substances (DDT) as you move through the food chain increases.

15 Next Review Session is: Thurs 5/18 @ 7:15 AM
Date: May 17th, period 5 Aim # 78: How has technology and industrialization negatively impacted our environment? HW: RRB pages 9-18 due Friday Castle Learning (QUIZ #3) due next MONDAY Human Impact Test next Wednesday Ecology Test Corrections due next Thursday Do Now: What is eutrophication? What causes it? How does it affect aquatic ecosystems? What is DDT? Which level of the food chain would have the greatest concentration? What is this called? Next Review Session is: Thurs 7:15 AM

16 Next Review Session is: Thurs 5/18 @ 7:15 AM
Date: May 17th, period 1 Aim # 78: How has technology and industrialization negatively impacted our environment? 17 12) Pollution: Thermal (Heat)
Some power plants & industries use water to cool their machines. The warmed water is then released into a river or lake. The warm water cannot hold as much oxygen as cold water and some species may suffocate.

18 13) Pollution: Air + The burning of fossil fuels that
were formed from the remains of organisms millions of years ago contribute to air pollution. CO2, SO2, NO2 + S = Sulfur N = Nitrogen

19 14) Effects of Air Pollution: Acid Rain
Due to burning of fossil fuels SO2 & NO2 Rain mixes with gases in air Burning of trees and destruction of pond ecosystems

20 14) Effects of Air Pollution: Smog
Smog is a kind of air pollution that results when certain pollutants react with sunlight.

21 15) Pollution: Solid Waste
A new increased demand for disposable products has led to solid waste problems.

22 16) How much trash does Manhasset produce each year?
The average U.S. citizen produces 4.5 pounds of trash each day. How many pounds of trash does Manhasset produce in one year? Manhasset Population = 8,080 Answer = 13,271,400pounds

23 Let’s Review! What is technology? How has it affected the human population? What causes acid rain? What is smog? What is thermal pollution? Why is this a problem? What is DDT? In which trophic level would there be the greatest concentrations of DDT? What is eutrophication?
