Mrs. Radley: Cannas “Old Mrs. Radley died that winter, but her death caused hardly a ripple—the neighborhood seldom saw her, except when she watered her cannas” (8.85). Sun exposure: Full Sun Soil type: Any, Sandy, Loamy, Clay Flower color: Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow, White Bloom time: Summer, Fall Cannas are among the most colorful summer bulbs—as flamboyant as their tropical American ancestry—with ruffled spikes tapering to refined buds. With their great reedy canes and palmy foliage, cannas would be magnificent even if they never bloomed. However, they keep blossoming from late spring or early summer to frost. Exotic, tropical creatures, cannas need lots of sunshine and fertile, moist soil but you don't have to pamper them. Many gardeners love the spectacular, drought-tolerant varieties that reach heights of over 6 feet. One gem is the rich, deep pink 'Los Angeles', which has a large floret and opens out so that you can see the face.

Azaleas are associated with the the astrological sign: Sagittarius (a positive, masculine sign). Sagittarius is also considered a “fire sign”. Across the United States various states (specifically Alabama) have Azalea Festivals in the spring.

Mrs. Dubose: Camellias Camellias are a hard, wooded, shrub-like plant with thick leaves. They like acidic, moisture balanced soils. They do not need direct light and do not thrive in drought conditions. In China, the camellia is a token for expressing devotion and union between a man and a woman.

Mayella: Geraniums Geraniums have been a popular window/window sill flower since the 1700s. These flowers require lots of sun and as a perennial, the blossoms are long-lived. Geraniums easily grow in a variety of regions as long as the soil does not receive an overabundance of water. These flowers will tolerate poor soil, but they are extremely sensitive to fungal diseases from excessive moisture and humidity.
