2 Overview of the Plant Rare prairie plant
(Wild Flowers West, 2009, [Online]) Common names include the Three Flower Avens, Pink Plumes, Johnny Smokers, Geum triflorum and it belongs in the rose family, or the Rosacea The Prairie Smoke resembles smoke hovering over the ground (Vlieg, 2008, [Online])

3 Sun The Prairie Smoke needs sun
The Prairie Smoke can live off of partial sun The rain garden includes partial sun, but no full sun

4 Water and Soil require ments
Soil and water The Prairie Smoke needs a medium amount of water Soil conditions must be dry or mesic soils The Prairie Smoke needs a soil pH level of about 6.8 to 7.2 (seven is pure water, the lower numbers are for acidity and higher numbers are for alkalinity)

5 Height of the Prairie Smoke
The Prairie Smoke can grow to be sixteen inches tall Can be as short as six inches The Prairie Smoke can grow from 0.15 – 0.4 meters tall

6 Clay in the Rain Garden The rain garden that will soon be planted is mostly clay loam The Prairie Smoke is known to do well in rich prairie loams The Prairie Smoke also does well in clay and sand

7 Care The Prairie Smoke rhizome (the underground root)
cuttings, which should be done in late summer or the early spring The Prairie Smoke also frequently forms dense mats creating an attractive ground cover for insects The roots of the Prairie Plants spread slowly if the rhizomes are cut

8 Found in Current Day Prairie Smoke can be found in prairies,
savannahs and lakeshores The Prairie Smoke is also found in open woods and sloping meadows The prairie smoke is found beside roads and parking lots

9 Natural Habitats Prairie Smoke is naturally found
in Midwestern Prairies Found from the lake shores of Lake Huron, including New York, and from Ontario to Alberta Has a native range from the northern tier of the United States through most of Canada

10 Blooming times The Prairie Smoke starts blooming
in April at the earliest Latest the Prairie Smoke blooms is June The Prairie Smoke stays in bloom to about August

11 The Prairie Smoke produces a nut-like seed
Fruits The Prairie Smoke produces a nut-like seed Fruits have plum-like gray tails about two inches long The tails are feathery and soft (Prairie Moon Nursery, 2012, [Online])

12 Flowers and Petals Flowers often have three to a cluster
Five oval petals stand mostly erect to form a cup about three fourths inches across The Prairie Smoke’s flowers are a reddish, purplish while the petals are a pinkish, yellowish or whitish (Mobyle, 2009, [Online]) (Blogspot, 2010, [Online])

13 Leaves and Stems The leaves appear to be fernlike
stem leaves are few, small and opposite and leaves are toothed Stems and leaves have soft, fuzzy hairs (Hilty, 2012, [Online]) (Slichter, 2007, [Online])
