Circulatory system The body's transportation system

Essential Questions Why does the heart need to beat all the time?
What is blood made of? How can I avoid problems with my heart and blood vessels? What is the difference between arteries and viens? What are capillaries?
3
The Heart Definition- The heart is a...
4
Blood Vessels Definition- The blood vessels are...
5
Materials Carried in the blood
Oxygen- from the lungs goes from blood into body cells and helps cells get energy from food Food particle- from the blood go to cells to help nourish them Cells that fight germs- are carried in the blood thoughout the body to support immune system
6
Horomones- are carried in the blood to parts of the body where they are needed to help those body parts grow and change Waste- biproducts to energy use in the cells are carried to different parts of the body where they are eliminated or dissolved
7
Circulatory System Structure
Blood is pumped from the _______ to the body cells and back to the _______. The blood then travels to the _______ to pick up oxygen, then returns to the ______ to begin its journey again.
8
Bloods Journey The heart pumps blood through a network of vessels.
The three main vessels are: 1______________ 2______________ 3______________
9
Arteries and Veins Function of the arteries is to _____________________________________________ Function of the veins is to _____________________________________________

Capillaries Capillaries are
12
Capillaries around alveoli in lungs
13
Heart Monitor Two ways to monitor heart function are:
Heart Rate-__________________________________________________________________ BloodPressure ________________________________________________________________________________________________
14
Heart Rate Count number of beats in 15 seconds and mulitply by 4 (10 by 6). Two main ways to check heart rate are: Radial Pulse - wrist Carotid Pulse - neck Good resting Heart Rate (RHR) is 60 to 70 beats per minute (bpm)
15
Radial Pulse Two fingers together just before wrist on thumb side apply slight pressure till pulse is felt. Use a watch or clock to count beats in ten second time. Multiply that number by 6. What's your RHR?
16
Carotid Pulse Two fingers together just to the side of the adams apple apply slight pressure until pulse is felt. Count number of beats in 10 sec. Multiply that number by 6. What's your RHR?
17
Blood Pressure Blood pressure is...
18
Blood Pressure Blood pressure(BP) is greatest when heart contracts and lowest between beats when heart is at rest. What does 120/80 mean? What is a good BP range for a teenager?
19
Parts of the blood Liquid parts or plasma make up 1/2 of blood volume - it transports dissolved food and blood cells. Solid parts are the cells. Red blood cells- carry oxygen to and waste products from parts of the body. White blood cells- destroy disease and germs Platelets- help blood clot when you get cut.

Use your journal! Describe what might happen to your blood pressure if your blood vessels become clogged? Why?
