Introduction - Purpose
To create an Information Technology (IT) Strategic Plan to advance the state of IT meet the opportunities for the University of Waterloo over the next 5 years

Introduction – Scope and Approach
To develop an effective IT Strategic Plan for the IT Community, with a focus on IST Intent Client driven, open process Based on a solid Architecture/Blueprint foundation Leveraging what is in place and integrating in new solutions/technology to meet requirements Results 1+ year, 1 – 3 year and 3 – 5 year views of the project portfolio and service enhancements/resourcing Performance measures and annual report cards

Overview of Strategic Plan – An Integrated Approach
Strategy-Focused Strategic Plan will be based on a Strategy that lays out the framework everyone works towards achieving Performance Driven Measure whether our initiatives help us achieve our goals Key Elements Vision, Mission, Principles and Values Visionary Goals Strategic Goals – the Priorities Strategic Objectives – shorter term, practical objectives; contribute to strategic goals Performance Measures & Targets – measure success of strategy Initiatives – specific projects to achieve specific goals

Parallel Initiatives Enterprise Architecture (Framework)
Activity Description Intersection with Project Enterprise Architecture (Framework) Model to describe uWaterloo “what, how, where, who, when, why” from various perspectives. Approach to changes, understand gaps, opportunities, impacts. IST “Organization for Success” (External contract) Assess IST org, update structures as needed to lead results of Plan. Occurs in parallel, results of the Strategic Plan feeding it. Faculty and department Strategic Plans Other uWaterloo strategic plans this fall. Alignment to the campus IT Strategy. Canadian University Strategic plans Other universities have produced plans. For possible reference materials. 6th Decade Plan’s Mid-Cycle Review (MCR) Aspects of the 6th Decade Plan on which to focus. 6 Pillars will impact Plan outcomes. 3 Key Goals from MCR 3 key areas for which task force groups will be set up. 3 Key Goals will impact Strategic Plan. Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA) Provincial government’s new measures. Includes Data Mapping. The measurements of initiatives coming from Plan should align.

Major Deliverables/Timing
Planning and organization done by mid-September Consultation and development of documentation in Fall Draft Strategy done by January Communications and refinements by March Completed Strategic Plan by end of the Fiscal Year
