2 Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet

3 Main concepts of our study
"Scheme of Redemption" The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as a novel, with 66 different chapters The real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin

4 Main concepts of our study
Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – The Background of Redemption Genesis – Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph Exodus 1-12 – Slavery In and Judgement On Egypt Exodus – Two Month Journey to Sinai Exodus 19-Numbers 10 – One Year at Sinai Number – Unbelief Number 15-Deut 34 – 40 Years of Wandering

5 Recap Finished covering book of Numbers
Discussed the bronze serpent and the comparison that Jesus made of Himself to it Balaam and his talking donkey Census is taken – All those who were counted in the census at Sinai are have died in the wilderness. The only ones remaining are Moses, Joshua, and Caleb Joshua is given authority as a leader

6 Deuteronomy overview Name of the book means “second law”
Covers two months One month of Moses preaching One month of mourning Moses’ death Moses addresses the 2nd generation of Israel from Egypt He’s preparing them to serve God in love and gratitude in their new home in Canaan

7 Moses begins his preaching
Deuteronomy 1:3 – In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the Lord had commanded him to give to them Chapters 1 – 3 is Moses recounting everything that has occurred over the past 40 years, beginning from around the time of the spies event

8 Moses begs God to enter Canaan
Deuteronomy 3:23-28 – “I also pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, ‘O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Yours? Let me, I pray, cross over and see the fair land that is beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.’ But the Lord was angry with me on your account, and would not listen to me; and the Lord said to me, ‘Enough! Speak to Me no more of this matter. Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes to the west and north and south and east, and see it with your eyes, for you shall not cross over this Jordan. But charge Joshua and encourage him and strengthen him, for he shall go across at the head of this people, and he will give them as an inheritance the land which you will see.’

9 Moses reminding Israel
Deuteronomy 4-5 – Moses reminds Israel of God delivering the from Egypt Chapter 5, Moses repeats them of the Ten Commandments Chapters 6-11 – Moses admonishes Israel with charges of obedience and faithfulness to God as they go forward into the land

10 A good reminder for parents
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 – “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

11 A good reminder for parents
Deuteronomy 6:4-9 – “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

12 A good reminder for parents
Deuteronomy 6:20-25 – "When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What do the testimonies and the statutes and the judgments mean which the Lord our God commanded you?’ then you shall say to your son, ‘We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord brought us from Egypt with a mighty hand. Moreover, the Lord showed great and distressing signs and wonders before our eyes against Egypt, Pharaoh and all his household; He brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land which He had sworn to our fathers.’ So the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today. It will be righteousness for us if we are careful to observe all this commandment before the Lord our God, just as He commanded us."

13 Intermarrying with Canaan forbidden
Deuteronomy 7:1-6 - When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many nations before you...and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them. Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons. For they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you and He will quickly destroy you. But thus you shall do to them: you shall tear down their altars, and smash their sacred pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire. For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

14 Intermarrying with Canaan forbidden

15 A reminder to be humble Deuteronomy 7:7-8 – The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the oath which He swore to your forefathers, the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

16 A reminder to be humble Deuteronomy 9:4-5 – “Do not say in your heart when the Lord your God has driven them out before you, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you. It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

17 A reminder to be humble Deuteronomy 9:6-8 – “Know, then, it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stubborn people. Remember, do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness; from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. Even at Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, and the Lord was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you..."

18 A reminder to be humble What’s the lesson for us?
We’re not special because of anything we have done We’re only special because God has chosen to love us We’re only saved because of what Jesus has done. Regardless of how righteously we could live, it would not be good enough to pay for our sin

19 Dealing with fear Deuteronomy 7:17-21 – If you should say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I dispossess them?’ you shall not be afraid of them; you shall well remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt: the great trials which your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders and the mighty hand and the outstretched arm by which the Lord your God brought you out. So shall the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish. You shall not dread them, for the Lord your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God

20 Dealing with fear Deuteronomy 9:1-3 – “Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities fortified to heaven, a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’ Know therefore today that it is the Lord your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the Lord has spoken to you.

21 Dealing with fear What’s the lesson for us? How can we best face our fears when the trials seem bigger than us? God’s got it handled! We can completely and fully trust Him to handle the situation in the best way

22 The slow roll-out Deuteronomy 7:22 – The Lord your God will clear away these nations before you little by little; you will not be able to put an end to them quickly, for the wild beasts would grow too numerous for you.

23 Moses reiterates the Law
Deuteronomy – Moses reiterates the Law to Israel, everything covering The various offerings Shunning idolatry Clean and unclean animals Sabbatical year The various feasts (Passover, Weeks, Booths) Administration of justice Levitical tithing Cities of refuge Domestic laws Sundry laws Handling crime

24 Moses reiterates the Law
Deuteronomy – Moses gives further instruction of what to do upon entering the land

25 Redemption enjoined Deuteronomy 18:15-18 – The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him. This is according to all that you asked of the Lord your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.’ The Lord said to me, ‘They have spoken well. I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

26 Redemption enjoined Deuteronomy 18:15-18
This is God once again enjoining the cross of into the story of redemption It’s a backwards look at the promises of Genesis 3:15 and Gen. 12:3 and a forward look to the fulfillment of these promises in Christ on the cross

27 Don’t forget!!!! Moses drives home the need to remember and not forget
“remember” is stated 15 times (NASB) “do not forget” is stated 9 times (NASB) Why is it important for us to remember?

28 Moses dies Deut 34:1-8 – Now Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, and the Negev and the plain in the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor; but no man knows his burial place to this day. Although Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died, his eye was not dim, nor his vigor abated. So the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.

29 Moses dies Deut 34:9-12 – Now Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. Since that time no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, for all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land, and for all the mighty power and for all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

30 The transfiguration Luke 9:28-36
For many years, the Lord met with Moses face to face in moving the train of redemption on from Egypt into Canaan Centuries later, we see Moses meeting with Jesus at His transfiguration to discuss Jesus’ impending death What awesome imagery! The Lord and Moses have been working hand in hand for a LONG time! Indeed, there has never been another prophet like Moses!

31 Coming up The Conquest of Canaan begins
