1 Jesus taught in parables. Why
Jesus taught in parables. Why? Those who had good and honest hearts would hear, understand, & bear fruit while the hardened hearts would not (Mt. 13:10-17). Jesus was able to separate the truth seekers from the curious. These mysteries about the kingdom had been hidden from the foundation of the world were now revealed in the gospel (Mt. 13:11, 35; Eph. 3:3-5). Parable- earthly story with a heavenly meaning. The disciples asked Jesus about the parable of the tares and wheat and He explained it to them the meaning. In these parables about the kingdom, the kingdom of heaven is the church on earth (Mt. 16:18-19; Col. 1:13-14). We are in the kingdom today if we are Christians. It was established on the Day of Pentecost. We have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness to His beloved Son.

2 Matthew 13:24-27 Tares among Wheat
Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’…  A farmer sowed good seed on good ground, but while he slept an enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat. Tare- “spurious wheat, darnel; a plant that grows in Palestine which resembles wheat in many ways but is worthless” (Strong’s). "Darnel is a weed grass (probably bearded darnel or Lolium temulentum) that looks very much like wheat until it is mature, when the seeds reveal a great difference. Darnel seeds aren't good for much except as chicken feed or to burn to prevent the spread of this weed" (World English Dictionary). If it’s eaten, it can lead to vomiting, convulsions, and sometimes death (Smith’s Dictionary). The enemy had nothing to gain, except to ruin the wheat crop of the farmer.

3 Matthew 13:28-30 Tares among Wheat
…And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’ But he said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”’” When his workers realized what had been done they asked the farmer if they should begin removing the tares, and he said no, because while you are gathering up the tares, you might uproot the wheat also. Wait until the harvest & then the difference will be clear. At the harvest, bring the wheat into the barn, then the tares will be gathered into bundles to be burned.

4 Matthew 13:36-39 The Tares Explained
His disciples came to Him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.” And He said, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil one; and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels…

5 Matthew 13:36-43 The Tares Explained
…So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age.  The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

15 Applications to our Lives Today
Jesus has all Authority in His field, the World (Matt. 28:18). Jesus sowed the good seed & by obeying Him individuals become children of the kingdom (John 3:5; Col. 1:13-14). The devil is God’s enemy & sows tares [children of evil who appear to be good like the wheat] (Jn. 8:44; Eph. 2:3; 5:6) As Christians, we live in a sinful world and must not allow ourselves to be deceived by the devil and become tares again (2 Cor. 11:2-3, 13-15).

16 The Devil is Sowing Tares to Deceive Brethren
The devil wants to you to think that the field is the church and will use false teachers to get you to believe that, but that’s not what Jesus said. (Field is the world- Mt. 13:38) If the field is the church, then you wouldn’t be able to discipline or mark brethren because the Scripture says they are to grow together until the harvest. Any interpretation that contradicts another passage [doesn’t harmonize with the rest of the Bible] is wrong and is the devil sowing tares to get you to believe a lie and be condemned (1 Cor. 14:33; 2 Thess. 2:9-12).

17 Sow the Seed of Truth so that the Tares might Repent & become Wheat Again
The Bible teaches that we must withdraw from or discipline unfaithful brethren so that they might repent of their sins and be saved before the harvest day comes [Judgment Day] (1 Cor. 5:1-13; 2 Cor. 2:6-11). We must mark and avoid those who cause division so that the rest of the brethren won’t be deceived into becoming tares for the devil also (Rom. 16:17-18). Expose darkness with the light of truth (Eph. 5:6-11) You can’t compromise the truth & have fellowship with false teachers, error, and sin & go to heaven! Devil will try to deceive you into thinking the field is the church! Don’t believe it. Many are asleep spiritually while the devil sows his tares. Expose the darkness with the light of truth. You must not participate in deeds of darkness but expose it with the truth. Fruit of the light- goodness, righteousness, and truth.

18 Applications to our Lives Today
God is longsuffering desiring that we grow to become good fruit until the harvest [not allowing us to be pulled up with the tares] (Luke 8:15; 2 Peter 1:5-11; James 5:7-9). Tares can become wheat and be saved before the harvest [we live in an age of grace] (Tit. 2:11; 2 Pet. 3:9, 15). God will punish evildoers in hell [including the hypocrites, stumbling blocks, and the lawless in the kingdom] and save the righteous in heaven. (2 Pet. 3:10; Matt. 13:49-50; 7:21-23; 25:21, 46) This is why evil is allowed to continue with the good and why God doesn’t punish the murderers, adulterers, homosexuals, drunkards, immediately, so that they might have time and opportunity to repent of their sins. God’s longsuffering is our salvation knowing that we could have died in our sins when we were rebellious against His will (2 Pet. 3:15)

19 Conclusion You are either ‘wheat’ or a ‘tare’. You are either a child of the kingdom or child of the devil. You will produce good fruit for God or bad fruit for Satan. You will either enjoy eternal life in heaven or suffer eternal punishment in hell. Don’t be deceived- you’ll reap what you sow (Gal. 6:7-10) If you aren’t ready for the harvest day (Judgment Day) obey the gospel or be restored (Acts 2:38; 8:20-22)!
