LESSON: PERIOD: M GROUP: 8Y DATE: 7/10/13 Pine strips Squares Hand tools boxes Envelopes with tasks in Red and Green discs Understand when to stop using one hand tool and when to move on to use another. Why do designers use nature as a source of inspiration? To be able to explain what a square is used for and to say state an advantage of it compared with a ruler. To be able to demonstrate how to use a square On different parts of their work. What do they already know? ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ That hand tools can be used to shape a piece of pine and that Nature is perfect because of Evolution Why is the order that you use tools so important? Why is a square better suited for its job than a ruler? How can a square be used elsewhere? All used in this lesson TW EP IE SM RL CT LITERACY: Description words used when talking about the material NUMERACY: Lots of measuring SMSC: We are using Pine rather than hardwood, a renewable timber. Why is this lesson interesting? How much progress have they made? Exit cards Post-it Progress Green/Red Discs Has the pupil used a Square? Has the pupil used a Square on another part of their project? The pupils are designing their own nature inspired piece of work and are taking responsibility for delivering part of the lesson, - envelopes provide tasks. Aesthetic, Evolution, Square File, Rasp, Coping Saw What can they find out? Teacher input to formalise concept How can they apply this? Demonstrate learning The pupils will use the new knowledge from the Square demo so they can apply it to their own work and Extend this knowledge to other parts of the project if they are able. The effect that tools have on the pine. How to use a Square to improve accuracy compared with a ruler. I will pick on pupils that have used tools correctly to explain concepts and to reinforce god technique. High ability pupils will lead a demonstration to each table after being shown how to deliver it.

Solo Taxonomy and the 7E Plan
I know that on my last observation you saw me use the idea of solo (structure of observed learning outcomes) taxonomy to aid with differentiation. I would say that solo taxonomy underpins all lessons I teach so that I can ensure there is learning at differentiated levels. What do the symbols mean? (in order as shown in the diagram to the left) prestructural - the pupils would know the names of all the tools they are using unistructural – pupils would know the order to use the tools in multistuctural - Understand when to stop using one hand tool and when to move on to use another relational - To be able to explain what a square is used for and to say state an advantage of it compared with a ruler extended abstract - To be able to demonstrate how to use a square on different parts of their work The 7E Plan The 7E approach to lesson planning considers how learning happens, every pupil has some prior knowledge, the 7E plans aims to build on this knowledge so that EVERY pupil makes progress. Elicit – Confirm what the pupils know by Q&A. Engage – Hook the students, use VAK, short, snappy and clear! Explore – The pupils learn by doing, experimenting independently with the tools. Explain – Use the pupils in demonstrations to explain what they are doing correctly/incorrectly Elaborate – High ability pupils are going to be chosen to do a demonstration at each table Extend – The pupils will be given the opportunity to continue after seeing the pupil led demo. Evaluate – Evaluation is ongoing, Red/Green discs, Exit cards, Post-it progress, My own observations of what is going on and general Q&A.
