Gilbert Expedition
In 1583 Sir Humphrey Gilbert attempted to establish the first English colony in North America.
His ship sailed down the East Coast of North America looking for a spot to settle, but their ship was lost at sea.
Let’s keep going. What’s the worst that could happen?

4. Section 1: England in America
I was hipster before it was cool.
Raleigh Expedition
In 1585 Sir Walter Raleigh established a colony of about 100 men on Roanoke Island (off the coast of North Carolina)
They suffered a very difficult winter and decided to head back to England

Roanoke Island
In 1587 Sir Walter Raleigh tried again by sending 91 men, 17 women and 9 children to re-start the abandoned settlement
John White was a mapmaker that joined the settlement. He studied the native American tribes and mapped out the area.
The colony began to run short on supplies and White traveled back to England to get more help.

Roanoke Island
John White found that England was fighting a war with Spain when he arrived.
Every available ship was sent to fight the Spanish Armada, a giant fleet of ships sent to attack England
This meant that his short trip home dragged on for three years.
When he got back to Roanoke Island with the supplies, he found the colony empty.
The missing settlers were never found.

7. Section 2: Jamestown Settlement

The Virginia Company
The failure of Sir Walter Raleigh's colony discouraged other settlements for a few years.
In 1606 several groups of merchants began asking King James I for a charter (the right to organize settlements in an area)
The Virginia Company received a charter to start a settlement in North America. (Guess where)

8. Section 2: Jamestown Settlement
The Virginia Company
In December 1606 the company sent 144 settlers in 3 ships to begin the settlement.
Their goal was to search for gold and to obtain fish and furs to send back to England.
They named their new settlement Jamestown in honor of the king who had given them their charter.
Who wants to sing about looking for gold?
Really? Nobody?

9. Section 2: Jamestown Settlement
The Virginia Company
Jamestown suffered hardships as most of the settlers searched for gold instead of planting crops.
The settlers were not prepared for the winter and by spring of only 38 settlers were still alive!

10. Section 2: Jamestown Settlement
John Smith
He was an experienced soldier who was sent to lead the Jamestown colony.
He forced the settles to work, explored the region and traded with native tribes for corn.
400 more settlers arrived in and Smith went back to England. Without a strong leader the colony, again, began to starve and they began to fight with their Native American neighbors over food.

11. Section 2: Jamestown Settlement
John Rolfe
The settlers never found gold, but they found something that they could sell back in England: Tobacco.
John Rolfe had brought seeds from the Caribbean and found that the plant grew well in the Virginia soil.
Relations between Rolfe and the natives improved after he married Pocahontas, the daughter of the tribal chief.
