Settling Roanoke: Sir Walter Raleigh (wealthy English landowner) granted permission by the queen of England (Queen Elizabeth I) to claim land in North America (1584) Claimed Roanoke Island (off the coast of modern day NC). The colony failed.

Second Settlement at Roanoke:
1587 Raleigh sent 91 men, 17 women and 9 children to Roanoke for a second attempt at a colony. John White’s (leader of colony) granddaughter Virginia Dare—first English child born in North America. White left for England to get supplies.

The Lost Colony: When John White returned in (delayed due to war between England and Spain) the settlement was deserted. Two clues:The letters “CRO” was sketched on a nearby tree and the word “Croatoan” was found on a post. Colonists were never seen again.

Possible Theories Left and started a colony in Chesapeake Bay?
Decided to live with the Native Americans? Tried to return to England and perished? Wiped out by disease?
