Raleigh was born in Devon, England
During Mary’s reign, his family was persecuted for being Protestant
Little is known about his childhood; by 1581 he was at Oxford studying law

3. Raleigh was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth
He received a royal patent giving him rights to lands discovered in the name of the English Crown in the New World
He settled Roanoke, Virginia, the settlement that disappeared

4. Raleigh is credited with introducing tobacco to England
He owned a plantation in Ireland given to him by the Queen
Raleigh was appointed governor of the island of Jersey near England

5. Raleigh ran into trouble when he decided to marry one of Queen Elizabeth’s maidens…something only done with her permission
Raleigh was jailed for his “crime”; Elizabeth finally freed him, but banished him and his new bride from court
Raleigh helped the English defeat the Spanish Armada

6. After Elizabeth’s death, Raleigh was imprisoned by James I; Raleigh was finally beheaded after Spain complained that Raleigh had conspired against their king
Raleigh wrote several volumes of poetry and historical pieces while imprisoned
Raleigh was beheaded in 1618
