European Culture and Society
Age of the Renaissance A movement towards absolute governments Catholic Church begins to lose power. Peasant revolts were common, a product of famine and a gap between rich and poor.

Religious Upheavals The Protestant Reformation led to changes in religious power. Henry VIII brings Anglican Church to England, only to have religion reversed under his daughter, Mary. Elizabeth would ensure Protestantism as the dominant religion, but Calvinists (eventually the Puritans) would have conflict with the church.

Europeans reach America
1492, Columbus reaches North America. Columbus wanted a trade route direct with Asia, but religious fervor and desire for wealth also consumed him. Colonized Hispaniola (modern day Haiti/Dominican Repub) after the Treaty of Tordesillas Cabot and Columbus thought it was Asia.

The Conquistadors Encomiendas established with Columbus, enslaving Native Americans. Leads to slavery from West Africa. Cortez and Dona Maria take over the Aztec Empire in 1520. Spaniards arrive (Columbian Exchange) Population million Disease brings it to 700,000 in eighty years. Spain would also claim Florida under Ponce De Leon

Colonizing from the French
Jacques Cartier begin Colonizing the Americas in the 1540s It only lasts two years, frequent attacks from Natives and death from Scurvy leads to it being abandoned. French Huguenots tried to colonize South Carolina. Spanish forces killed everyone. Realized that reciprocity is key, needed to work WITH Native population, began trading beaver pelts. New France established in 1608. Battle of Lake Champlain. Iroquois alliances created.

England’s efforts to Colonize
Francis Drake sails around the world, coming into contact with Natives in California. Rivals with Spain, the Spanish attempt to Colonize in 1572 near the Chesapeake failed with the Powhatan Natives. Then came Roanoke, chosen by a charter gained by Sir Walter Raleigh

Mystery of Roanoke 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh begins Colony on Roanoke Island. Natives were friendly, shared crops with the Colonists. English soldiers kill Roanoke indian leader, Wingina in 1586. Conflict intensifies between Spain and England, and ships are unable to return after Drake stops by in A crew finally makes landfall in 1590. Everyone is gone, all that is left is rusty armor, and CROATOAN cut into post.
