Are most of these bodies: a. smaller than pebbles b. bigger than boulders c. the size of the universe 3. Where do most of these objects come from? 4. What is the name of these same small bodies as they fall through the Earth’s atmosphere?

3 5. What is the name of the phenomenon in which many of these objects fall through the atmosphere in a short period of time? 6. Do most of these bodies burn up before they land on Earth? 7. What is the name of these same small bodies after they land on the Earth? 8. Are these objects rare or plentiful on Earth? 10. Are these objects made of: a. rock b. metals c. rock and metals d. all of the above

4 What are Meteoroids Small bodies that travel through space.
Most are smaller than the size of a pebble.

5 Meteoroid Orbits Meteoroids orbit around the sun
They travel at different speeds and in different orbits The fastest travel at about 26 miles per second

6 What are Meteors? A meteor is a meteoroid that has entered the Earth’s atmosphere.

7 What are Meteor Showers?

11 What are Meteorites? A meteorite is a meteor that has fallen to Earth.

Stony (93%) - rocks Achondrites (7%) – rocks and matter Iron (5%) – metal Stony-Iron (2%) – rocks and metal

13 The Biggest Meteorite The biggest meteorite ever found on earth is the Hoba meteorite. It weighed over 100 tons (200,000 pounds).

14 Craters The bigger the meteorite, the bigger the crater.
Barringer Crater in Arizona. Formed 49,000 years ago. It was a 300,000 ton meteorite.

15 Where do they come from? Asteroids – are rocky or metallic objects. It orbits the Sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Some call it a minor planet. Asteroids – are rocky or metallic objects. It orbits the Sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. A few asteroids approach the Sun more closely. None of the asteroids have atmospheres. Some call it a minor planet.

17 Any other places? Moon – pieces of the moon
Comets – icy ball orbiting the sun Planet Mars – pieces of mars

18 Meteorite Trivia Many meteorites from Mars have landed on Earth.
