5 Why Study German? it is NOT difficult.German and English share the same Germanic root.There are thousands of words which are closely related known as “cognates.” For example, the English chin is Kinn in German. Water becomes Wasser and father turns into Vater. German is the language of inventors and innovators. German is very important in the academic community. In fact, it ranks second as the most commonly used scientific language. Germany is an economic powerhouse with free education for foreigners: German is not only an interesting option for academics, but also those in the business world should consider brushing up on their Deutsch. Germany is the biggest economy within the European Union and the fourth largest worldwide. It is home to numerous international corporations and on the front line of new technologies. German companies are global market leaders. Speaking of German companies: want to work for a business which is an international market leader in its field? Having German skills on your resume might be able to help you get in the door. Most importantly: It’s fun to learn German at LHS!

6 German at LHS We offer 4 years of German (German 1 and 2 are unleveled and you can take German 3 and 4 at Honors or CP 1 Level) There is an Exchange to Germany every other year German Fest: an evening of skit presentations with student designed scripts and set designs It is a small program, so your classmates will be some of your closest friends in high school! We are like family :)

Italian Film and Conversation & AP Italian Italian National Exam Contest We study lifestyle, food, music, art & fashion! Small program where you will get to know your classmates well over the course of four years!

9 Why Study Latin? The Romans pondered the same big questions we do today -- Learn to read their answers! You can read about famous Romans, ancient myths, and great poetry A great way to build your vocabulary and become a better writer Lots of similarities to French, Spanish and Italian Because of its intrinsic logic & structure, and the discipline it requires, it gives your mind a terrific workout It’s FUN!

10 Latin at LHS Certamen - Quiz-Bowl style competition against other schools Cultural trip to Italy every other year We offer 4 years of Latin study (Latin 1 and 2 are unleveled, you can take Latin 3 and 4 at Honors or CP 1 Level) Independent Study in Ancient Greek available to upper-level Latin students Your Latin classmates will be some of your closest friends in high school!!

11 Mandarin Levels 1-5 College Prep, Honors, and AP Language & Culture
Exchange Program (every other year) 9th graders can participate in the exchange. Students can take a placement exam on March 1st & 2nd after school at LHS to place into a higher level.
