1 Work-Based Learning Tools
CTEIG TA Workshop Work-Based Learning Tools PRESENTERS Angela Higdon – Grant Coordinator, Napa County Office of Education Suzanne Murphy - Grant Coordinator, Napa County Office of Education Jim Souza – ROP Coordinator, Santa Barbara County Education Office

2 The Need Tools to help everyone within the region to see Work-Based Learning as an instructional strategy. To establish common definition and student learning outcomes while allowing for some personalization across districts. Tools to help ensure the Work-Based Learning becomes ”standard practice” after the funding is gone.

3 History/Background Decided to develop a regional on-line Work-Based Learning manual with definitions, student learning outcomes and downloadable and customizable tools. Began as something we’d do within our own CCPT region but after discovering the need, decided to partner with other consortia groups throughout Northern California. Committee of 27 representing several County Offices of Education, School Districts, Community Colleges & Industry Intermediaries in Northern California. CTEIG Technical Assistance providers came together to review WBL materials in order to standardize the work we were doing with our grantees across the state. Pulled together resources from a variety of providers to offer a comprehensive tool in one easy to access site.

5 The Result? A comprehensive easy-to-use on-line tool with downloadable resources which can be customized to meet local needs!

6 Manual Exploration Activity
Scenario Job Shadow You are working with a Medical Science Patient Care Pathway and are incorporating a unit on Radiology in October. You are looking at different ways to diagnose disease or disorder through X-ray and MRI. Kaiser has a representative that sits on your advisory board and he/she have been very open to partnering to enhance your current program. You’d like to set up a Job Shadow where students will have the opportunity to shadow Radiology Technician. Ideally, this would be a full-day Job Shadow where a small group of students would work with 1-2 employees in the Radiology department. Group 1: Walk through the process and tools you would use to set up this activity as the Organizer/Educator. Group 2: What resources/activities and forms should be provided or assigned to students to prepare? Follow-Up? Group 3: What resources could be provided to the host/industry partner?

7 Legal Concerns Please be aware that this WBL Manual site is designed to be used as a tool but may not cover all legal requirements for your district. (i.e. fingerprinting, liability insurance, etc.) Before engaging in any Work-Based Learning activity, please check with your district to ensure that all legal concerns are addressed according to your local area’s needs.
