6 Tonight’s Agenda Intro to Persuasive Communication
Elevator Pitch versus Business Plan Communication Model Influence Tactics How to Sabotage your Submission Readability Statistics are your Friend Get it Right: Citation and Quotation

7 Persuasive Communication
Purpose of Communication Information Examples: Newspapers, journals, textbooks Entertainment Examples: Media, art, television Persuasion Examples: Commercials, advertisements

8 Elevator Pitch versus Business Plan
“The Pitch” “The Plan” Informal/Conversational “Sizzle” and “Steak” Get to the Point Short “chunks” with selected details Leave them wanting to hear more! Don’t forget mini-bibliography Formal/Structured “Steak” and “Sizzle” Set up the Argument Longer sections with extensive detail Leave them wanting to sign you up! Don’t forget full bibliography When you’re at a restaurant you want your food to have a good balance of sizzle and steak. The sizzle is what gets you interested and the steak is what keeps you coming back. The pitch is the sizzle, the plan is the steak

9 Communication Model The sender of the message needs to be as clear as possible with what they want the receiver to hear. The receiver should not have to read twice or guess what the sender is trying to say. There needs to be clear communication channels throughout the process.

10 Influence Tactics Ways on how to work with people in your group

11 How to Sabotage Your Submission
Poor First impression Solutions: Proof read all spelling, grammatical elements Difficult to navigate Solutions: Ensure everything flows sequentially when reading it in order Difficult to read Solutions: Have a friend or family member read over your report to ensure that the language is easy to follow Difficult to understand Solutions: After someone else reads the report, ask them about any parts that need clarification

12 Readability Statistics Are Your Friend
MS Word File, Options Proofing Check off everything including Readability Statistics Click Review, Spelling and Grammar Make changes At the end, see a display like this Persuasive Communication Goals: Reduce % passive sentences Reduce # words per sentence (17 max.) Reduce reading level to Grade 10 at most Do not have run on sentences, be clear and concise

13 Citation and Quotation
Anything that is NOT your own idea/information has to be CITED in the body of your work Anything that is not your own words has to be QUOTED and CITED in the body of your work. Every source that is cited in the body has to appear in the Bibliography. Let’s look at an example on the next slide Check out the McMaster citation guide for any questions about how to properly cite sources

14 Get it Right – Citation and Quotation
White House says upcoming Trump budget will hike defence spending by 10%, make cuts to domestic programs - no info “White House says upcoming Trump budget will hike defence spending by 10%, make cuts to domestic programs” – quoted by not fully cited According to the National Post, “White House says upcoming Trump budget will hike defence spending by 10%, make cuts to domestic programs” – fully quoted and fully cited In your bibliography the source would be the National Post, not the White House, because you were not in on the phone call! IMPROPER CITING IS PLAGERISM – if you are not sure, ask your mentor or one of the exec team!

15 Takeaways Only get one shot Identify the strengths of each team member
Leverage those strengths through strategic deployment on parts of each communication Everyone needs to take accountability for ensuring the final product is as good as it can get Use outside resources in ethical and approved ways
