Procedure for Subject Choice
Individual student appointment with Ms.O’Connor to discuss option, return CAT4 results Own research using Qualifax and Careers Portal, talking to teachers, parents etc Completion of Options Form: Students indicate their preferences 1-5 Applied Maths and RE are offered as an EIGTH or extra subject – therefore students still pick 3 options from the list Forms to be handed in the Monday 24th April after Easter break, in order of receipt

Ms. O’Connor meets students 1-1 Teachers explain to students how subject will develop over the LC course CAT4 results – strengths and difficulties, learning preferences

1. College/Career Requirements
Each college’s entry requirements vary Entry requirements depend on level of the course, e.g. Level 6/7 or 8 Check college requirements in relation to specific courses

College Requirements Honours Degree (Level 8) courses require 6 subjects, including a minimum of 2 or 3 at H5 Varying requirements e.g. UCD - 6 Subjects including 2 H5s & minimum of 4 H7s/O6s (i.e. a pass) including English, Irish and a Language (with the exception of Engineering, Science and Social Science) TCD - 6 Subjects including 3 H5s & minimum of 3 H7s/O6s (i.e. a pass) including passes in English, Maths and a Language Ordinary Degree (Level 7) / Higher Certificate (Level 6) Most Universities don’t offer Level 7/6 courses There are varying requirements e.g. IADT - 5 subjects (H7/O6) including English DIT - 5 subjects (H7/O6) including Maths and English or Irish

2. Course Requirements There may be a particular course requirement for many courses at college. The subjects mainly concerned are the Languages and the Sciences and Maths grades/levels There may also be a requirement to achieve a certain grade and level in certain subjects for many courses at college, e.g. OB3/HD3 in LC Maths for Sports and exercise management, UCD

Third language Essential for (unless exempt):
Entry into N.U.I. Universities, e.g. UCD, UCC, Maynooth, UCG Exceptions: Nursing Engineering, Science, Social Science & Ag Science in UCD DIT - Various Courses in Tourism, Hotel, Leisure, Business with Languages and Culinary Arts Courses Cadetships with the Defence Forces Gardaí – English/Irish AND a third language

Laboratory Science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics)
Essential for: *Most Level 8 courses in Science, Engineering, Medical, Para-Medical and some Technical Courses in Universities and the DIT Product Design (NCAD) *UCD Science will accept Geography and Applied Maths if a candidate has no lab science Useful for: Level 7/ Level 6 Courses in Science and Engineering Some Apprenticeships

Foundation Maths Foundation Maths WILL fulfil the Maths requirement for ENTRY to Universities and Institutes of Technology But WILL NOT satisfy SPECIFIC course requirements, e.g. Sport & Exercise Management, UCD, O3/H7 Maths, (TBC)

Honours Maths – Bonus Points
Bonus points for Honours Maths was introduced for 2012 entry to college Students will be awarded an extra 25 points for all awards from H1 to H6 H7 will NOT be eligible for bonus points The extra 25 points will be awarded before total points are calculated from the best six results for the student For example, a student who is achieves H6 in Honours Maths will be awarded points for this result, i.e. 71 points

Things to note 150 courses on the CAO require a Science subject
7 courses require Chemistry, e.g. Veterinary UCD, H4 2 courses require Biology, e.g.Human Health and Disease, TCD requires H5 Biology & H5 in another Lab Science 1 course requires Physics 61 courses require HL Maths, e.g. Level 8 Engineering, Computer Science TCD & UCD 21 courses require HL Irish, e.g. Primary Teaching No course requires Business as a specific subject Since 2012 there are 25 bonus points for each grade at HL Maths, this will still be in place but will NOT be offered to students obtaining H7 ** – Students tab, useful tools, minimum subject requirements, Leaving Cert subjects

Points Implications Study 7/8 SUBJECTS for Leaving Certificate
Points are based on BEST 6 RESULTS obtained in ONE SITTING – these do not have to be counted from the subjects for specific course requirements ALL SUBJECTS carry equal points (except Honours Maths) The points for every course are based on supply and demand each year, e.g.. The popularity of a course

Other Requirements Entrance to certain courses may depend on other requirements such as: PORTFOLIO – Art, Film, etc APTITUDE TEST – Medicine, HPAT AUDITION – Drama INTERVIEW – Art, etc In these cases points may be allotted for these assessments.

Conclusion Choose subjects most interested in studying.
Choose subjects likely to succeed at. Be aware of college/course requirements (Languages and Sciences) The majority of courses in college do not have specific subject requirements.
