Later, there’s more violence over the girls. Johnny kills Bob, the Soc, in the park. Johhny & Ponyboy run away, with Dally’s assistance. They’re hiding in the church on top of Jay Mountain. Johnny & Ponyboy disguise themselves. On Friday, Dally visits to inform them what’s going on at home. They decide to return, but before they’re able they try to save some kids from the fire in the church they’ve been hiding out in. Ponyboy reunites with family. The rumble between the Greasers and the Socs takes place. Johnny cannot recover from his injuries and dies. Dally dies too.

Options TASK: You’ll be writing a letter to The Outsiders novel, the author, or a character from The Outsiders novel. OPTIONS: Choose ONE of the following styles: Goodbye Thank You Congratulations I’m Sorry In Sympathy Each of these templates are available in Focus under the assignment files for your grades. -Goodbye = saying farewell to the book -Thank you = thanking the book for what you learned -Congratulations = congratulating the book of 50 years being in print and the impact it’s made in that amount of time -I’m sorry = apology for judging the book too harshly at the beginning -In sympathy = writing to a character in the novel who has lost someone

Requirements All letters must: Include the five parts of a letter
Include proper formatting Be no more than one-page in length Include the theme Be written neatly Use proper mechanics (spelling, grammar, punctuation)

Work Period Write a Letter to The Outsiders novel, author, or a character from the novel, using one of the 5 options You may reference the example documents in Focus (located under the assignment files in the Grades section for this class) but you don’t have to follow the templates verbatim. Hold onto your comp. book. It goes home with you now. Turn in your Outsiders Mind Map to the class inbox Return Ms. Barker’s supplies. Pack-up completely. Throw away trash. Sit silently and wait for Ms. Barker to dismiss you.

Closing Turn and talk with your elbow partner (groups of 3 are fine when there’s odd numbers) to discuss the essential question: What does it mean to be an insider or an outsider? Be prepared to share out your partner’s viewpoints when called upon.
